Omi
Hello, The site we are building on has not been maintained in a while and is rather overgrown as a result: Any advice on the best way to get this cleaned up before the build starts? We are planning to do as much as possible ourselves before the ground works start and have a petrol multi-tool and assorted gardening equipment at our disposal. Thanks! Ronan 1
I'd just spray it and let it die back a bit and then get the digger driver to take the scraw off before he starts stripping the topsoil of the site
Conor
Digger will have that scraped away in a couple hours. I'd let nature be until then. We strimmed and mowed our site almost monthly for over a year while we waited to start... complete waste of time.
PeterW
No point in spraying at this time of year as there isn’t enough growth and you’ll just be wasting chemicals. If you want it tidier then a brush cutter with a star blade will take the top off but to be honest you will struggle to do anything with a standard domestic multi unit. Omi
Thanks - it'll be a few months before we can start on the build. Just looking to tidy things up a bit so that we can can enjoy the site in the meantime.

Invest in a decent strimmer with a brush cutter blade for the first trim, then you should be able to keep on top of new growth with a line head. I bought a Tanaka (for less than £250 iirc) to clear our site of head-height brambles and thistles; great bit of kit that has easily paid for itself many times over. Not easy work but quite rewarding, and it gives wildlife more of a chance to vacate than a tractor or digger.

Looks like it'll keep us busy for a few weekends!
Mr Punter
I don't think there will be a lot of benefit. Spray with glyphosate after April. Scrape the very top with the digger and pile it up for a later bonfire or compost heap.
Iceverge
Get a farmer to chuck a few sheep or cattle in there for a day. You won't know yourself.

You may need to offer them some cash mind you as there's not much nutritional value in the plants there ATM.
