Zinc angled standing seam.

Recommended Posts

The quotes I've received are not £3k no.

Best I've had, although granted, I've only had a few, was £50 under £4k and that's ex VAT.  And no, that doesn't include any build up or prep, which is expected to be "by others".

So, I'm looking at £5k more or less to clad that piece as you see it.

Absolutely no way I will consider spending that.

I'm in south Wales. Not exactly the zinc specialist capital of the world. Would be easier to find a unicorn here than a zinc roofer.

Bristol has a few installers, one of these was my £4k+ quote for greencoat. Ha, you gotta laugh. For the area I have to work, the actual metal is maybe £800 for two 100kg coils, so why it adds up to in excess of £5k for the job I have no idea.

I will be speaking to a few others next week, but if I'm unable to get a more realistic price, I'll bin the idea.

To answer your question re buildup of substrate, yes, all that would be done and ready to go.

I just cannot see how the forming and fitting of the material for the job in hand equates to £3.5k plus for labour.

In a nutshell, it can’t.

As an alternative, and DIY’able, what about timber or timber composite cladding? Or any other DIY’able cladding for that matter. It would achieve your end game of hiding some of the brickwork.

gc100, can I ask if your hidden gutter is an off-the-shelf system or fabricated by the roofers?

my carpenter/joiner/builder made the gutter out of marine ply then the roofers made a zinc liner for it on site. At 14meters long it actually goes in 2 directions each end of the house with hidden pipes in the walls.

@ gc100.... lovely looking job that.

Thanks for replying to my thread.

How long ago was this done for you?

in the middle of the first lockdown last year.

regarding the price. TBH don’t think there was much meat left on the bone for the company. The Zinc alone was about 9k I think and like I said 6 guys x 1 week, then 2-4 guys for another 2 weeks. It’s a skilled job and not many people know how to do it (well).

the hidden gutters definitely added to the price as the detailing around this is quite detailed for water tightness and air flow.

Thanks for the response gc100. Interesting to hear the price for the zinc.

£9k worth of zinc = roughly 15 rolls of zinc at current prices.  I know that on average that 15 coils of zinc would cover approx 195..ish sq metres of standing seam, but I guess you've had the additional gutter work etc to factor in too, so its tricky to know what actual area of standing seam there was. £130 per metre is fair though, and I would expect that for a premium zinc product.

In fact, I spoke to a metals supplier who told me himself that £100 / £130 per sq metre was around a reasonable figure to be paying. When I mentioned the prices I'd been provided with, he just couldn't understand it.

I'll be trying to find out next week whether this is viable or not for my job. Hopefully it will be, as it adds a nice detail, but the cost of it has to be realistic. I'm not interested in paying massively over the odds, simply on the basis that the job is not at a large enough scale to make a real killing for installers.

We'll see.

That's exactly what happened with ours and I ended updoing it myself. Do you have any drawings for what you're looking to clad? I'm curious as to how complicated your proposed cladding can be ?

My roof starts on Monday (tomorrow)  It's been delayed, I had to change my supplier. We are going for greencoat aluminium , it;s around 220m2 at a cost of £96 m2.

Original it was going to be done with a snapfit type system, but was told the roof was too complex for it so now flat rolled sheets are being using with roofer doing all the shaping.

Getting so solar PV panels that fit between the panels, although it will probable take 100year to pay it off :( Flextron solor panels

Does that mean you have to ship the roof panels to BiPVCo to get the PV bonded to them?

I'll PM you Simon, and can perhaps forward on the drawing. It isn't a complex job and in fact, I've been told so by another installer that was aimed my way from Sean at the metal roof company. (Hes a good guy as you said)

Just actually checked - the bill was 11.5K including VAT - (14no VM Anthra Coils, breather membrane and Clips.)

Its VM Zinc so it backed by them and their 30 year warranty as well.

I think from memory the roof is 220m2

Also regarding cost- my second bill (and last was 16.8K including VAT). If we say the guys doing the installing where on £220/day rate. It works out as 13.2K cost in labour to the company, leaving them a profit of 3.6K before tax. So seems about right for me.

I looked at that as it would be far more elegant solution but its seems crazy expensive. Do you mind sharing your cost and how many Kw?

We're based in mid Wales and had a few quotes. They mostly ranged in the order of £90-100m2. I got the feeling a lot of them weren't interested in us what with being a domestic client, they seemed more interested in commercial stuff. The one we've ended up agreeing to do the job is from Scotland believe it or not who came in around £75-80m2. I asked them how they can come all the way to Wales and still make the job pay to which he replied that they do jobs on some of the Scottish islands that are more difficult to reach than Wales! He did say that the bulk of the job is based on the Zinc spot prices though which does makes their quotes quite reactive to market movements in the commodity.

So was the total for materials was £11.5k.? That would be about right for 14 coils, including membrane, clips etc, from what I am seeing currently re: prices.

The total area that 14 coils covers would be approx 180 sq metres, plus the gutter work would have used a bit also.

It's a lovely looking job though and I do like the colour you've chosen a lot.

If you say it came in at circa £130 a metre overall cost, that's not bad at all and sounds fair.

Tosh,

Do you know the area you require to be done, and is it for standing seam.?
