Kitchen extension

Hi all, we are looking to extend the kitchen and we are really unsure what to do for best. We are thinking we can either knock the conservatory down and extend the kitchen up to where the lounge is (if not too expensive) or knock through into the lounge (and move the lounge to front).Any ideas welcome!

Depends who you are and how you like to live

 

are you

an old fogey who likes a separate dining room 

or a young couple young kids likes a big open plan kitchen diner. 

 

The house we are building doesnt have a single wall downstairs to separate kitchen dining living it’s all one big space, but that’s us. 

How do you want it to work for you.

I suppose a lot depends on the budget you have. Also theres no room sizes or area on here, so hard to know exactly how big the spaces are.

 

Do you want a huge kitchen? Is the current one limiting you in any way?

 

I think the idea of moving the lounge to the front, dining room to back and knock through into kitchen is a good idea, for not a lot of money. If you want a larger kitchen, smaller dining room you could flip the kitchen and dining having them both at back of the house, and with the wall gone, I suspect you would be able to get an island in to house more seating too. One hint though, make sure you get a door off of the wall seperating dining room and lounge, to stop cooking smells going upstairs.

Welcome to the forum - you may nee a good Structural Engineer to make sure you don't do anything that undermines the upper structure.

Starting point is how do you want to use the space.

 

Do you have a family? Do you ever use the dining room as an actual dining room.

 

If you have kids and don't use the dining room, a kitchen/dining/family room at the back and quiet lounge at the front would probably be the more expected arrangement nowadays.

 

You might want to get a separate utility room also.

 

The of course there is what can be done and how much will it cost. You are probably looking at 40-50k for a new kitchen, rear extension and taking down/moving a couple of walls. But you house won't be any bigger after all that, although it might be nicer and more usable.

Where's North?

Plot extent and boundaries.

Neighbours, trees and views.

Extent of upstairs.

 

A sketch plan would be fine. You will get more useful comments.
