H F
I’m in the process of repainting our hallway. The previous owners had painted the walls before we moved in (rather poorly) and when I have applied paint over some of the areas I get blotch marks like the ones in the photo. 99% of the walls get good coverage, but there are some dodgy areas. I need to apply 3-4 coats to cover these marks. Any idea what could be causing them?

PeterW
Plaster looks as rough as toast. If that’s a “new” opening then I’d wonder if damp has got behind the plaster or if it’s been done with sand and cement. Scrape the top off and see what’s underneath. Could be mould, damp, or just poor preparation but I wouldn’t be doing anything over the top and sealing in crap like that.
Ferdinand
Since you are there for a long time I would look underneath the surface as suggested. You can sometimes bodge these with a stain block, but not for this situation.
Russell griffiths
I wonder if it’s had a silicon waterproof coating on it and now the paint is separating as it cannot sink in.
Cpd
I had something similar and it was due to damp......
H F
It could be damp as there is a waste pipe behind that. Will turn my attention to it next week and find the underlying cause. Thanks for all the feedback.
Temp
After inspecting cause perhaps a job for Zinsser primer sealer stain killer?
