Hi all, Thanks for letting me join your forum. I've recently moved to Lincolnshire. I'm not doing a full self build but renovating/refurbishing/altering an ex-MOD property that I've bought. First of all I need advice on brick walls, which I'll ask in the relevant forum, but wanted to say hello first.

I have my SAP calculation for my forthcoming bungalow and all generally looks good. The roof and floor have U-values of 0.08 W/m².k. However, the walls are a bit low, about 0.18 W/m².k. I did this on-purpose to maximise floor-space but it has turned-out a bit lower than I expected so I am thinking of adding an additional layer of insulation inside the the airtightness layer of say 25mm or 50mm of PIR. I was planning a 25mm service void anyhow. My questions: Could I just fill that service void with sheet PIR everywhere except where services run? That would do the job without stealing more floor area. I am aware that electrical cables may need de-rating if they are insulated. To counter this, could I just leave, say, 50mm air-gap each side of a cable run? Are there any other problems with largely doing-away with a service void by filling it with insulation? (For service runs, as a bungalow with a warm roof I will have 200mm of open space between the metal-web joists in the flat roof). (The external walls will be 240mm I-beams at 600m centres full-filled with blown-cellulose/Warmcel.) (The airtightness layer is Pro-Passiv Smartply.) (I am aware of condensation-risk analysis and I am confident that adding such a small amount of extra insulation won't cause a problem).

I’m looking for coping stones for my soon to be reconstructed wall. I would like something more traditional than double weathered, such as a chunky chamfered design. Like lots of other products, nothing is available at the local building suppliers, so I am looking further afield. Whilst there are several manufacturers selling via the internet, I would welcome comments or recommendations about the nature and quality of the products sold by such entities. Thanks.

Hello, I am constructing a small shed (3.5m x 2.2m) that will be used only for storage. I want to render the external walls with the K-Rend silicone render to match my outbuilding and my house. I was wondering if you could help me understand what the best way to construct the shed is so that it does not cost a lot and can be rendered. My ideas: - wooden frame + OSD (not sure how easy it is to render over it) - wooden frame + cement board (seems like the way to go) - blocks (seems like a lot more work and expense) any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Planning for plasterer to go over the old plastered walls with a thin skim. Of course I'd already started to prep the old walls by taking out old hooks, flaking paint etc. Now with with the humidity from the damp weather, I'm getting condensation on the walls which is evident along hairline cracks. Is there anything I can apply to prevent this (i.e. prevent the plaster soaking up any moisture) as I don't want to end up having to remove all the old plaster due to damage from the condensation. Plasterer is set to start in January, so only 5-6 wks time. There's no heating and the house is pretty open (not all doors in yet). Should I be worried? I've read of PVA, but is that going to cause an issue with the skim being applied later? I've read conflicting views about that.

Just wondered what people have done in terms of lining plant room walls and ceiling? Board and skim seems entirely pointless and of no use for fixing. So, I was going to go with 22mm OSB on the walls and ceiling and (only if I have time) a couple of coats of white emulsion? What have others done?
