Hi All, Was wondering if anyone could offer some help on what has happened when I changed my light switch cover. i changed one with no issues, but then when I went to change another one, it only works upstairs when I push the button but the one downstairs does not turn it on when I push the button. It is an upstairs landing light that has its own switch upstairs and a switch that turns it on and off from downstairs too. Below are some photos. The photo of the switches - the one on the left is the original one, and the one on the right is the new one, but I noted there are more holes in the one on the right (4 vs the 3). I have 5 wires in total 9 ( one red and blue went into the same hole and the other two red ones went into the same hole, then on the bottom, the yellow one wire went in there). I replicated this with the new switch, put the yellow one on the bottom on and it didn't work at first, but then I moved it to the other hole and it was OK, worked. The light switch on the landing worked. However, I realised when I was downstairs, wanting to switch off the light for upstairs, it would not work. The switch downstairs is a two button switch. I also noticed when I went back up to the landing to turn off the light, when i turned it off, then back on, the light actually flickered (or seemed to flicker, it went on, blinked like it went off then back on - not sure if the wires I put into the new switch cover is the reason for this). I was under the impression I wouldn't need to hire an electrician to change a simple thing like a light switch cover - but am I wrong? should I be getting an electrician in for this?? Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I was beginning to think I was being pedantic or...my standards are too high?! glad I'm not the only one who thinks it is a poor effort.

it started off well. yes, they turned up on time the first day. and just because they did a full day doesn't mean it was done well. I didn't see it until they had finished. Other days, they turned up lately or not at all = hence the comment about the work ethic.

Hello All, I wondered if anyone could offer some advice. I have hired a professional to do the decorating - to paint and wallpaper. They claimed to have over 10 years experience and they had good reviews on facebook and yell. But now I am wondering if the reviews are even real or all his friends because his workmanship and work ethic is absolutely disgusting. We started off very well...they turned up, and on time, but after the first day, I was left wondering if I should just tell them not to come back. They lined the walls and some areas where just cut out a shape and patch it in the wall. I could of done a better job and I am an amatuer! I asked about it and they assured me that after they had caulked it, I would not be able to see it. I was all the time thinking, if you had done it right, you wouldn't need to caulk it. But what do I know, I am not a professional with over 10 years exp...but hey, I am not sure this person is either. They proceeded to paint over it and i can still see the rips and cuts. Is this normal to have decorators caulk over the lining paper? and for them to cut shapes and patch in the lining paper? It is like he is playing paper tetris on my walls. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

do you mean for an internal corner?

Hello All, I wondered if anyone could offer some advice. What is the best way to wallpaper (lining paper) to be painted - around an outside facing corner? I have hired a professional to do the decorating and to my shock, they have just lined around the said corner but it has a bubble in the corner (you poke it and it moves because there is air in there). I purposely had the wall beaded so the corner was on fleck, but now the decorator just went round the corner and there is a visible bubble!! I might be wrong but i thought you couldn't paper a full width of paper around a corner i.e. there should be a flap over the corner then joined/overlapped on the next piece. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi, Does anyone know how to best deal with overlapping wallpaper - say about 1mm due to uneven walls. I used a patterned wallpaper and it only happened on three drops of wallpaper. where the wallpaper is lined up perfectly, but towards top, there is a small overlap - I guess you could ignore it, but because I know it is there, it irks me. Is it possible to fix this - cut it away with a stanley knife perhaps? I checked on Google but all they have are answers on how to deal with overlapping vinyl wallpaper, and my wallpaper isn't vinyl. Any advice would be appreciated.

thanks for your advice. however, i don't think any of it is an option. If the walls are uneven I cannot do anything about it and I have already put on the wall rock thermal insulation and its corresponding thermal liner. This is not cheap to simply strip the lot and see what is underneath. There is nothing underneath, everything was stripped and prepped before all this went on. I thought in general lining paper had to go on before painting or wallpapering as a rule of thumb? yes, totally agree, lining paper is a pain, but I've put it on.

thank you. Attached some photos - the first two. I had some questions about other things too. I had one wall skimmed. So after that, I sealed it per instructed and then painted it. One one said (3rd image) I see a load of cracks, why is this cracking - does anyone know please? On photo 4, which is the other side of that wall of photo 3 ( it is like an internal chimney wall), this was also skimmed and sealed before being painted. I painted it and I didn't many cracks, however, there are areas on the wall that starts to clump and lump when I paint it. It is taking an asbolute butt load of coats to cover this wall. I am using Valspar, first time using this brand (and will be the last). I bought a 5kg tub of custom mixed paint and I've already used half of it up and this is only for this chimney wall and side and ONE wall (with the window in it), so you can imagine, you'd think that wall wouldn't need much. But because I am having to re-coat so many bloody times I'm nearly finished with the tub. Granted the wall with the window as the wall rock on it and the thermal lining paper - which I think is just absorbing the paint like no tomorrow. But still, it is taking a boat load of effort to paint. So, when that wall started cracking, I'm beginning to pull my hair out with it all.? Photo 4, this actually happened on my cieling, which was boarded then skimmed, I sealed, then painted and it would become patchy in places and then clump and lump on the re-coat. Like it was resistant to stick on it - like the sealer (perhaps applied too much) began to repel the top coat. Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi All, I am currently trying to think of how best to remedy a problem I have. Wall A, has wall rock and lining paper and the end goal is to paint it, then as it meets a corner it shares with Wall B, which has been lined and will be wallpapered, the corner will leave a rather unsightly, gap or look wonky. If I use the wallpaper to fill the corner gaps, it will make my wallpaper uneven and the subsequent rolls put up. If I put on the wallpaper as straight as I can on Wall B, I get a wonky gap. Does anyone have any advice on how to best deal with this please? How to minimise or what best to do? Thanks.

i'M GOINg to have to google these words as I do not know what they mean
-
oh sorry! I didn't see the link. thank u! Another question, I live in an old house, and the skirting board has come away from the wall, can I use easifill to fill this gap? or is easifill only meant for filling smaller gaps?
-
thank u! I had a look at toolstation, there are so many, can you please recommend one please?

Hi All, I recently painted my doors (which had been previously stripped) with alkali resisting primer (per the instructions of using the type of paint removing paste). I have one coat on the wood work so far and will go for another coat, but I have noticed some cracks in the wood work. Can I use easifill to fill the cracks or would it be best to get a wood filler? I'm guessing painting/filling the crack with paint is not ideal! Any advice would be appreciated.
-
lol, I think i will leave it be hahah, thanks for sharing the story.
-
I cannot. it is over wallrock which is on the wall horizontally and the lining paper is on vertically. it would basically take it off. hence my question about other possibilities to remedy but thanks for your advice
-
if I am going to line over it, wouldn't I then have lots more overlaps that would be highlighted when I paint it?
-
ah, it is intended for painting though. so could you suggest another method that would be kinder to the lining paper at all? Thanks.
-
Hi, Does anyone know if I can use easifill to fill in gaps in lining paper at all? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
-
thanks! for the tips :0) if I could take the radiator off the wall in the first place, it would make everything so easy! I just lined around it the other day!
-
oic!! thanks for clarifying that's really helpful
