  1. thanks very much! when you say fine sandpaper, is 40 ok?
  2. Hi All, Does anyone know if it is OK to paint a radiator (using radiator paint), over existing paint on the radiator? I am not sure what type of paint is on there to be honest. If I have to remove the said old, unknown paint on the radiator, how best to do this please?
  3. does mybuilder fair any better?
  4. I know right! the decorator disappeared on us after having waited 3 months for him. The bath fitter also after waiting nearly 5 months. I know they are getting the pick of the bunch but it is down right annoying, they should just say they don't want the job. My plasterer never returned my messages and finally responded but would have to wait 5 months for him to show - leaving us in a pickle if we decided to wait and he no-showed also!
  5. thanks! I'm not having much luck with getting recommendations from friends (as they never seem to need tradespeople over the years). I have been recommended tradesmen by some tradespeople who have come in to quote themselves, but then they are the ones that have just disappeared into thin air. So now I am apprehensive about calling any people recommended by other tradespeople. They seem to be a complete waste of time.
  6. Hi All, Does anyone have any advice on the trustatrader site/reviews? are they reliable and impartial? I know checkatrade isn't so wondered how this site faired in comparison. Thanks!
  7. thanks for your advice
  8. lol, thanks! the formulaes look super complicated!!!
  9. Hi All, I am thinking of getting some radiator covers and upon my research I found that it is best to get foil heat reflectors - but during my research, it kept just saying heat reflecting radiator covers (I thought the cover might be heat reflecting) so I was a bit confused when I googled this and a separate sheet of foil heat reflectors popped up. Does anyone else out there use these or has experience or advice on this topic please? do I buy the radiator cover and then install the heat reflecting foil on the wall? it was a mission lining the back of the radiator itself - and I still have to paper it too!! Any advice would be appreciated it. Thanks.
  10. neither had I, but when I was doing my rounds on videos, all of them mentioned this. It brought me back to the days when I did wallpapering (over 10 years ago) and I wondered why there was a gap overlap when I could of sworn I didn't have that when I put the paper up...it must of 'expanded'.
  11. Hi All, I wondered if you could help. I am in the process of lining my walls, some of the walls will be papered and some walls will be painted once lined. For the walls that will be papered on top, I have positioned the lining paper horitzontally, and left a 1mm gap between the papers as I have view some videos and it suggested that the paper would expand or what not, so best to leave a gap. However, it did mention that on the first paper and second paper applied, there was no need to leave a gap, but on the 2nd, 3rd, onwards, to leave a 1mm gap, which I have done. But for the walls that I will paint, I plan to line vertically, then paint, but do I still follow the same process of leaving a 1mm gap between the papers? wouldn't you see the gaps if I painted this? Any advice would be appreciated.
  12. thanks for the advice! I only thought maybe to add some mix because the one I mixed for sizing was a more watered down version and was then worried if I used this mixture, the lining paper wouldn't stick as well?
  13. Hi All, Does anyone know how long I can save unused mixed solvite paste for? i.e. I mixed some yesterday to size the walls, and I didn't end up using it all (I only mixed half a packet), and I still have quite a bit left. Can I still use this to hang the lining paper? but adding more mix to the paste to make it thicker? Or shall I bin it and start from scratch? Any tips would be appreciated. Thanks!
  14. thanks! no instructions for sizing, just the application of the type of paper. Thank you!
  15. Hi All, I was wondering if anyone could help advise on what the mixing ratio should be for Solvite All Purpose paste when sizing walls! Thanks in advance.
  16. thanks for the advice! The word to describe the paint I've used, the word has finally come to me...it feels like chalk and looks like chalk! a stick of unused stick but 1000000% bigger (hand banister sized).
  17. btw, does anyone know if it is best to use a matt or gloss paint on woodwork? I was recommended the matt paint, and I used it last night to prime/undercoat (it is a 2 in 1), but the end result looks very dull, and even to touch is not so nice. it still needs another coat and sand before the top coats, but it just seems so dull and i think if u were to wipe it with a wet towel it would just come off?
  18. it sands like a dream! but the dust is intense! ha ha
  19. thanks! Yes, easifill is very easy to use!! and very easy to sand. I just sanded it down with relative ease. Do you think on application is enough or do you need another layer than sand before sealing it with sealer?
  20. ah thanks for clarfying! Is there a point removing it if it is indeed stuck on the wall very firmly? (at least it is not peeling is my worry, that sticking something on something that is peeling is not great but if it is firmly stuck, should I still ideally remove?) Will I damage the walls by steaming?
  21. do you mean to steam off the red label or to steam off the unshiftable paint or paste under it?
  22. brill, thank u!
  23. thanks Vijay! I was thinking of using a mini foam roller for the top coat actually, not sure if that will go well ha ha. I won't be painting any glass.
  24. Thanks Jilly! I am using the Valspar Trade Primer and Undercoat, it was recommended to me from the people at the orange shop. I am applying the paint with some Harris paint brushes, the ones that guarantee that it does not loose any paint bristles (this does guarantee doesn't seem to be worth a thing, as it lost bristles almost immediately when I used one of the brushes to apply sealer elsewhere!). Is sandpaper at 140 considered rough? Thanks!
