I only had room for 70mm Pir in the floor downstairs so went with fan coils, very fast acting and wonderful in those rare heatwaves (cooling mode). I am considering replacing my old husky ashp I have had for the last 7 years but from what I read on here they weren't much good to start with.

I just checked and my underfloor has only 70mm celotex boards over existing slab then 18mm composite boards on top. I went with fan coils downstairs as I couldn't afford to raise floor height from that. Has anyone tried one of the low profile fibre board underfloor heating or is that a lot less effective than concrete ? I know you can get 18mm or even 15mm systems now. I guess the lack of thermal mass would mean it cools a lot quicker but would also warm quicker too.

Husky air source heat pump, anyone still got one?
Simtronic replied to Simtronic's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Mine is still working, 7Kw 8 years old though lots of defrost cycles at the moment. What would you suggest as a replacement today and why? I run on a timer 8 until 5 but mainly because the unit is noisy in a quiet neighbourhood and to take advantage of solar. I rarely get to 22 in the house when really cold outside. -

UFH upstairs and fan coils downstairs house is a 3 bad semi about 1000 sq ft run run for 8 hours a day (daylight only) -
Welcome aboard and the off grid bunker sounds like a great project

Plastic vs Copper pipes for radiators
Simtronic replied to Raks's topic in Central Heating (Radiators)
I have used those fittings on all my underfloor heating and fan coils and not one has had a drip. -
And you are entitled to your view 1 Never take anything a politician says at face value especially if they are in opposition whatever party they represent 2 all remainers would think that, as all leavers believe they are more realistic too

Some of those things may of been goals I saw no promises. 1 Never promised or expected out of our hands. Who knows we may get a deal now or later 2 They will and have offers already 3 More has been put into NHS though Covid had a big influence in that 4 No border acceptable it is the EU that is insisting on it 5 None given up by us they may be restricted by EU yet 6 I am sure that is the intention 7 Intention is to protect it from others 8 True and to a wider field without EU restrictions 9 Intended date partially achieved 10 Having control means it is our choice, and we do need some immigration

I am sure there are people that do regret or worry about having voted to leave they probably don't want to advertise it though. I have no regrets yet, but it is a leap of faith. I might live to regret it. I liked Garys tunes but never knew who he was, now I know what I know I think he is despicable. As for the cat ... at least it was just a cat! and I like cats

I think we all should have a problem with it, but democracy in this country is what it is and I think I would rather that than the alternatives. Too many people have no idea or care and that leaves room for minorities to have a bigger say

I think the EU want a deal more than we need it, and not just for the fishing rights being offered. They will try to make it seem like we have no chance of a deal until the last. Then make an offer we should just find acceptable. They are trying hard to make it seem a nightmare for any country that might have the gumption to leave. If we wanted a better deal we would have to show we are happy to walk away without one. I hope we do get one as it will make things much easier in the short term I just hope we don't give away too much. If we don't get a deal it will take a while to settle down, there will be problems for the government and many companies but we will benefit in the end. I think the EU would then offer us a much better deal once they see we are managing without them. The majority of those who bothered to vote voted to leave, if you didn't vote, you have no say and shouldn't moan about the outcome. If you voted to remain sorry democracy won. If you voted to leave be prepared for the hopefully temporary problems of no deal.

I have a Husky ASHP I got it nearly new minus the tank which leaked. I removed it as part of the deal then fitted it in my house and it has been running fine for the last 7 years. It is noisy and although originally rated at 7kw seems to struggle in cold weather. I have done a lot of insulation. Do they loose power over time? should I try to improve it or buy something more efficient? Have they improved much? Does anyone still have a Husky working? I know they have gone bust. So far i have changed the internal Wilo water pump but otherwise it has been reliable. I haven't got a huge budget, there is no gas available and I have a 4kw Solar array If you think I should change it let me know what are my options, any recommendations either way gratefully received

Thanks onoff I knew the alkaline protected I didn't realise it only lasts so long. Some art deco buildings are still sound. My comment was about the base that had steel square plates set into the concrete, I didn't watch all the videos. I just wanted to see how he anchored it to the ground, looked quite effective. I agree insulation board and Osb is nothing like as good as a Sip and cold bridging unnecessarily is a sin in my eyes.

The flow through each individual circuit is only dependant on the pump at each manifold, the thermostatic blending valve is a sort of an automatic bypass. I found this needs to be set to the highest temperature while bleeding the air out as I had similar problems when I first installed mine 5 years ago. I hope this helps

Steel set in concrete doesn't rust it has protective qualities, they never protect re-bar in building foundations. The more feet the more the load is spread. I would say he has done this before and will work fine.

ASHPs take heat from the air and move it to water so wet is the only option using ashp. Electric underfloor heating is very expensive to run unless you only use it when sunny and have a massive solar array. Not really viable in the UK unless you have money to burn

I built my own from bits from ebay around £500 for pipes spreader plates, 8 port manifold and blender. But if I factor in my time a lot more edit: this was 8 years ago and doesn't include a whole lot of insulation

Just been reading up on it and Denso and Stiebel Eltron are bringing a CO2 heat-pump out for residential use. As far as I can see it is only available in Japan at the moment. Hopefully it will see a revival but how long until available here?
-
Maybe there are other reasons why they aren't using CO2, how effective is it and at what cost?

I would look for an inverter driven monoblock one of the latest ones that run on the more environmentally friendly R32 COP, size and noise levels are important factors. Price so depends on your needs, preferences and expectations. I think underfloor heating is a no brainer in a self build, I know it is a lot harder to retro fit. Good luck

I forgot to mention I have one already, s Solic unit that heats the hot water only which does all our hot water 9 months of the year the ASHP does the rest. I have read through a few of the posts here on the sunamp it seems it may not be worth the investment. I love the idea but need something reliable and compatible as I prepare for retirement.

Thank you Thorfun and Declan I have a 4kw array on a carport I built from joists (no south facing roof was available) and a 7kw Husky ASHP. Heat calculations were done by Husky when fitted 7 years ago as 4.4kw. Worked great until cylinder leaked just about when Husky went bust. I have re-plumbed the whole thing using a 75litre buffer and 180 litre hot water tank. Apart from a water pump failure in the outside unit (monoblock) which I canged for a Wilo it has been working well since. I am considering a Sunamp as it seems the losses would be much less in the cold loft and PV diverter could be used. My concerns are charging the sunamp when excess pv not available. ASHP will go to 60 at expense of cop but I doubt that is enough to melt the PCM

Just joined I have a 3 bed house with solar and ashp Anyone have a sunamp and ashp setup?
