I'm a self-builder from South Cumbria. I've had a plot for three years (as of May 2016). Planning went through unopposed and without comment from anyone, a first for the local area according to the architect. Because of the tight access we started by building a cabin in the garden in which to live, a static caravan as too big to get into site and I'd heard horror stories from another self-builder living in the village, he, his wife and two kids have lived in one for three years so far, he reckons it will be another two years before the house is finished.

  1. I’ve just been reminded by my interior designer, (wife) she had the kitchen/family room, dining room and bathrooms designed, layout, colours, tiles, worktops and flooring, before we met with the architect. The house was essentially designed around these features. We’re at the plaster stage now and colour charts and wall paper samples keep appearing. She tells me, only a bloke would point a house in one colour! Harman, I’m sorry your struggling to get an answer to you original question. If only you’d asked about thermal mass, air source heat pumps or under floor heating! It’s a bloke thing, sorry......
  2. That’s something I need. What sort of cable did you lay to the gate?
  3. Has anyone got a list of the household items that can be integrated in Home Assistant?
  4. Once the plasters on the walls its too late to worry about design issues. The design needs to be agreed with the client before the build starts. Plan things like service runs, location of plant room, levels of insulation, the use of modern technology to heat water and space heating, solar PV, light and shade etc. MHVR, ASHP. Fabric First .... The list goes on.
  5. 7kw. I'm now thinking of using Willis heaters for the UFH and save the ASHP money. How long before batteries are cheap enough to use an a dump for excess PV?
  6. Do we know which Sunamp he had? Has anyone else used Jeremy's design themselves?
  7. Herb, thanks for posting Jeremy's later Sunmap layout, I had the earlier out of date version. Am I correct to say he didn't actually use the Stiebel Eltron inline heater? It was only a backup?
  8. I am going Sunamp. Mind you, i've not bought it yet. I was just mulling over alternative options! This happens when you come back to your hot water design after 18 months!
  9. The other question is ventilated or un-ventilated cylinder?
  10. I'm after a 7kw, I could go smaller if I separate out the UFH and use an inline Willis heater just for that.
  11. The owner of our local renewable company never gets his hand dirty, everything he installs is done by sub-contractors. Clearly the margins are such that he simply acts as a sales man - nice car, nice clothes and nice house!
  12. I'm now at the stage where I need to install the UFH system (pipes are already designed and in), hot water (first fix complete - H&C pipes from manifolds to taps installed), ASHP and buy and install a Sunamp (sized, just need to buy it). Oh, and install the solar panels, the inverter and Eddi unit. Digging back through all my plumbing and heating notes and drawings, I'd had an idea to install something similar to the system Jeremy Harris designed for his place. I've now found that Jeremy and his House at Orchard Mill web site have gone off line. Has anyone got any current bast practice layout drawings, or web site links, they could point me to? I work best when I have a drawing, rather than a written description!
  13. So have I. The insulation is on my job list (very long job list). However I need to get the plasterboard finished, so its come up the priority list.
  14. I'm installing my own. All i need now are all the bits as the plant room is finished and ready for me to start ! @LA3222 what sort of system/layout are you going for?
  15. I agree, just very annoying that I only get adverts for overpriced rubbish, when all I want is adverts for competitively priced ASHPs!!!
