I have to face facts: my mobility is reducing a good deal more quickly than I'd like. And sometimes the mobility I do have is accompanied by a reasonable amount of pain. My memory isn't what it once was either. I regard this new phase in life as just another challenge to be faced and - if not beaten - then dealt with crisply. By accident I bumped into IFTTT. Also by accident we renewed our Amazon Fire Stick recently, and that comes with Alexa built in. Curious as ever, mucked about with it. Didn't take long to make the link between the two..... Yeah, I get it: ya don't get owt for nowt. There are - for some - security or privacy concerns which outweigh any perceived advantage. I accept that. But when you need to work out how to get back up again before bending down to pick up the hen's eggs: when, before descending into a trench, you work out which ladder will be the least painful to use: when you for the first time realise that you can't be sure who rang you when and on what date ... its time to harness a bit of creative thinking. Voice activation has to be part of my future because it will help reduce the number of sources of pain. Please can we discuss on this thread POSITIVE reasons for opting in to either IFTT and Alexa or IFTT and Google Assistant? Maybe there's another voice activated technology which you know about that might help control simple parts of our lives?

Russ, she's very very nice. Patient, understanding, well informed, highly qualified and has a sense of humour. I'm quitting while I'm ahead -

Ours goes right under the the ringbeam, and runs clear of any concrete by 100mm or so. The BCO suggested that there was probably no need to take any precautionary measures in terms of ground movement. -

Happy to worry just enough, but no more than necessary. Allowing for differential settlement? Never even gave it a thought. The foul drain comes down inside the house and under the ring beam (shown above, apologies the illustration was intended for something else) as shown here... as you can see below the foul drain emerges under the ring beam, and there's a couple of hundred mm clearance and after a bit of fight, it now looks like this In terms of differential settlement, do I need one of those rubber connector thingies like in your photo between the pipe and the I/C Or will I be able to connect straight up to the I/C without one? -

Just rechecked for level. All within 30 mm except for the stonyest bit ... 115 mm too high. And that was just where the shuttering was reducing the rate of trench collapse. I took the shuttering off so I could work more quickly. You know the rest. Can't take a joke? Don't self build -

@Bob of this parish popped round the other day and without ceremony, left me a few bags full of second hand ..... I thanked him, and thought no more about it - until today. BH folk can be very kind. Thanks J. Since they are second hand, I thought I'd give them a rinse - taught me a lot - one or two of the seals have nicks in them. Should I recycle those? And that grey thing at the back is as good as a child's transformer toy (and bloody expensive FGS!) . It can be as twisted as a drunk pretzel ... brilliant fun. Anyway, I do as @ProDave tells me and try dry fitting the bend that closest matches my guestimate - take a pic and come back here for further mickey taking I suspect ..... and of course there's Mr Griffiths with his usual cheery note.... For the anything much. -

No. In common with many BH members, we ask for advice about stuff we've never done before. -
Thirty cubic meters of soil, sand, clay, MOT1, sore backs, calloused hands and swearing later ..... Am I glad to have got to this stage without a drop of rain being spilt.....not to mention enjoy - deeply enjoy - going to the loo for the first time when this system is built! Right: first hiccup The pipe doesn't come out of the house square to the foundation. Laterally, its about 10 to 15 degrees off . You can just about see it in this photo. How best can I correct that mis-placement?

HSE notification Form F10 / CDM 2015 etc
ToughButterCup replied to Olly P's topic in Project & Site Management
As far as am aware the situation in respect of CDM2015 has not changed. Here is why I say that. Read the pinned post on CDM2015 -
I've 'worried' the same problem half to death myself and in the absence of evidence, come to this conclusion : Maybe the 3/4" issue has to do with supplying 2 separate 15mm outlets at the same time. In other words, in a shower for example, if it is possible to use both the overhead showerhead and the hand held wand at the same time, then the unit will work better with a 3/4 supply.

Bedding thickness for foul drainage pipe: how thick?

My recent re-aquaintace with the mark 1 shovel, MOT1, and Glacial Till has made me much more cautious about how deep to dig my foul drain trench. Its not a matter of popping down to fetch red diesel any more ..... I have found these two YT videos very helpful Osma's guidance (at 4:05) and this gentle bit of mickey taking ... How much shingle needs to be put under the drainage pipe? The guy from Osma says 100mm; is he right? I can't find any guidance that says it must be 100mm.

Well, it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good. Maybe we could use this current horror to help start thinking a little more about sustainability. Thinking about your statement Let's have a bash then. I'll give it a go later today I'm wondering what the proportions should be? -

OK. Here ya go then... Make good a small patch of plaster. No plaster in da house baby. ... You have some soft sand, some sharp sand a bit of cement, bit of lime , some 10mm stone , water , polyfilla Go on son teach me summat. -
secure screws in a wall patch a bit of plaster replace a broken hammer / mattock / sledge hammer handle bed foul drainage pipes make up a bit of mortar / concrete make a safe working platform at eaves height sharpen a saw These are all items involved in the process of doing little jobs - long time bottom of the list jobs - for which normally I would have: bought a new handle, bought some patching plaster, ordered a lorry load of gravel, ordered some scaffolding, bought a new saw: in other words by buying stuff. Except now I can't. Which made me wonder - how did my dad or his dad's dad manage to do those tasks? Or better put, can we learn from how they used to .... My dad made what are now called Rawlplugs out of wood. He sharpened a stick chopped it to length, hammered the stick in the hole and then broke it off at the wall. Perfect. No need for Rawlplugs. Easy. But sharpen a saw? Mix up a bit of mortar? What would do as a temporary 'fix' ? I bet there are loads of folk on BH who know a quick, cheap, accessible way to do some of the smaller jobs we commonly face while building a house. Ideas?
