Sorry for not replying sooner, Onoff I run it into the scrap dealers less than a mile away . It's a fantastic plot or will be after its cleaned up , moving the scrap was a 3 stage process Firstly by hand up a steep slope to where I could load in to dumper ( first time I've used a dumper so settled on a 1 tonne To get used to ) then 2 days loading the dumper and driving 100 mtrs up the hill to where I could get a truck in . Finally loading on to the truck and running 12 loads to the scrap dealers . A few numbers : Tipper truck hire £80pd x 2 + £50 in diesel S&JRomford 1 tonne Thaites Dumper £160 pw +£40 + (diesel not known yet ) Wickham Diggers Scrap 9 Ton this included £58 for 7 old car batteries. Biggin hill Scrap dealers Waterproofs for pampered Son £28 Decathlon sport. Total out going £438 Scrap money received £602 = +£164 ?

Took last week off work to clear the bottom of the garden ,With the aid of my Son who was obliged to take annual leave (shame he couldn't take it when it wasn't piddling down )we cleared just over 9 ton of scrap metal .Very satisfying to tick one of the jobs to do off the list .We may need to put the rake over the lawn ?.

Apologies PeterW, there you go Zoothorn get the builder to quote you for that then use the discrepancy in the 100mm floor insulation cost as a bargaining chip to get the price down ,say it with a smile then let the builder get on and do it .
-
Ok I'm going to muddy the waters ? , I'm not a brickie and would be interested in anyone else opinion . Would it not be possible to cut existing blocks out on the window ( to make a proper bond ) then rebuild up the required 230mm ? It doesn't seem to be that big a job imho.
-
You've got breeze block ,so it's going to be rendered / clad ? It will be corrected then ,On a one off let it go . In future pull em soon as you see it or change your brickie
-
Zoothorn ,you need to concentrate on what's important the thickness of a lintel isn't. What's important is the correct installation .if you say its bowed 18mm then tell the builder to put it right . An now armed with the correct way to install a lintel explain when he objects to having to do the job twice if he had propped it up in the 1st place then he wouldn't have too. Same goes for any extra work you have to have done due to the wrong start depth of the build it his cost and you need to make that abundantly clear .
-
We need photos of lintel in situ to see your concerns , very unlikely your builder would put the wrong spec Lintel/ damaged in place when he knows a bco would flag it up.
-
Your builder quoted you for 100mm insulation but the bco has agreed to 50mm , so in that case you can assume ( check with builder) the insulation didn't go under the 100mm slab . In that case you have a little leverage in the quote he's given you due to the reduced cost of floor insulation.

We get our galvanized steel picked up and back in 2 days ( wedge group) others are available ? , if you go down this route your steel can be a little rusty but no paint on it .Painted or very rusty steel will need shot blasting which will be additional cost.

That particular valve is not compliant anymore ,not enough air gap
-
Thanks , I think I'll go belt and braces on mine seeing as it's on sloping ground
-
Did you use fibres instead of rebar or as well as .
-
Another option for anyone else doing this is to buy a 3 part syphon, you can pick them up for a less than a tenner, that way it makes servicing in the future a 3 minute job, and it will only cost a £1 for a new syphon washer.

Any opinions on a small tractor and trailer as a better option say a kubota

Got me thinking, it's only that there's a load of scrap at the bottom that I want to clear, once the build starts I'd only want to take stuff down and come back up empty.

Thinking about buying a dumper (big boys Tonka toy) but am worried about the slope concensus of opinion is about 20' degrees but I think a little more. Question is I've seen quite a few dumpers for sale for around £1000 but have no idea whether they would have any trouble getting up the hill. I say this having nearly got a Nissan cabstar stuck down the bottom a few weeks ago. ?
