Web joist prices. All roughly the same or worth shopping around?
Digmixfill replied to Digmixfill's topic in Floor Structures
Measuring or cutting? -
I'm going to get a price for web joists. With all other items so far I've found large variations in costs between suppliers for the same products. In most cases it has been worthwhile spending time on multiple quotes. Are web joists the same and worth the effort of tracking down better prices, or will I find that multiple quotes come in at pretty much the same price?

Working platform suggestions - internal blockwork
Digmixfill replied to Digmixfill's topic in Tools & Equipment
The towers I have picked up have 4ft between the uprights. 5 scaffold boards fit across them with a little to spare. -

You mix for 10 minutes? Perhaps that is the secret i'm missing. I've got a special super accurate water measurer, it use to be a yogurt pot. The wedged wooden handle would have the same effect as propping up the rear feet of the mixer. It makes quite a difference. Have you tried shovelling out of your Belle? The lip in the centre of the drum is most annoying. I'm going to look at a tower section later. I'll measure to see how many scaffold boards this particular one will take across the top. Do you fasten anything under the boards to stop them walking off the tower or do you find they stay where they are put? -

Thanks for finding the video. Are the five boards on the far tower ordinary scaffold boards? What are the longer boards you are using on the near section? -

My current technique involves running the edge of the trowel across the top block edge before placing. There's nothing i can do for the bulges and they bugger up running a level across the face -

I'll give the third block checking a go for the next course. How do you deal with the block edge against the line when the block edges are anything but straight? The last pack of celcons had blocks with bulges on their face and the edges are always rough and wobbly. I absolutely hated the DPC course. Trying to manipulate the block, the DPC and dress the DPM under the DPC was plain nasty. I have still to perfect the mix. It just never turns out as buttery smooth as the tutorials i've watched. Ditto on the Belle 130. With a small load in the drum i've found the stuff falls from the rear of the drum better if i prop up the rear legs by an inch or two. -

That's the kind of thing I had in mind along with trestles and boards. I'm laying to a line along with all of the level checks ? -

I bed one block at a time. I can lay the second course without disturbing the previous. I leave the two courses overnight and the next day i install the insulation board and resin in ties ready for the next two courses. I've put down 6 courses so far and looked at the 7th and thought "platform" Thanks for the confirmation. Just needed to know how many boards to price up a set. -

I have come across these type of things. They looked promising but I haven't spotted one that had a decent sized platform. -

I'm mortally afraid I will screw up and end up with un-straight walls. I check the face of every block. I place a level diagonally across the face and the previous rows. I don't put enough mortar down. I put too much mortar down. Same with the perps. I'm only doing a few hours a day block laying, so it will take me quite some time to gain the confidence and techniques of a professional. I will probably have it nailed shortly before I finish. -

This goes without saying I'm not doing too bad with the ties so far. I've got to mark out, drill and resin them in. Lots of chalk marks on the wall - missing mark is the tell tale. Do builders trestles take 4 boards across the top of them? -

Thanks for all the info so far. I suspect i'll go for a combination of trestles and small tower sections. The trestles at toptower are rated at 450kg and the draper one I in my original post only 150kg. Not up to it. The 9 blocks an hour probably isn't too far off. I spend an age making sure the end blocks are square, level and to gauge. I'm at the stage where I still check everything far too many times and I remove and re-lay many blocks because i'm not happy with them. Returns and reveals also take me an age. Fortunately i'm not on the clock, so it all takes as long as it takes. -

I had spotted these and wondered if they'd be up to the job with planks. adjustable trestle They'd come in useful for other stuff too. -
I'm putting up the inner leaf inside my barn. I've almost done as much blockwork as I can without using a lift. I'm looking for suggestions for a platform. The longest wall is 4m and i'm thinking that I'll need to lay blocks to around the 2.5m mark from the platform. After that i install floor joists and then move platform up to the next floor - happy to be steered otherwise? What would you recommend I take a look at for a platform?

Formula for calculating electricity requirement?
Digmixfill replied to Digmixfill's topic in Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP)
Thanks for that. I've downloaded it. ? -
I mentioned in a thread a while ago that i had a fair bit of external temperature and humidity data for my site. (I've got external temperature, humidity and pressure recorded at minute intervals for many years) I've been playing with sap figures trying to decide which insulation to opt for and would like to take sap numbers and try to get some annual electricity figures for GSHP/ASHP etc. Sap W/C x delta C / CoP for heating duration seems very simplistic and won't take into account the internal temperature change as the building heats up. Not sure if i'm overthinking this. Any pointers to reading greatly appreciated.

Is there a rule of thumb percentage add on for tongue and groove pir cavity board ordering? I've had a quick look around for wastage figures for t&g pir in cavity installations but haven't turned up anything yet.

Your floor looks very unspoilt. Did you use dust sheets or did it just not splatter during application?

I approached icynene about DIY and got the reply "Thank you for your enquiry, our products are only fitted by specialist contractors and do not come in DIY format" Which spray foam are you using?

I know it's just concrete, but FLOORS!
Digmixfill replied to Digmixfill's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Definitely a massive lift. :) Really nice not to have dirt and rocks under foot. And it's so clean, but i'm sure that won't last very long. Yes, insulation and screed with UF pipes to go on top of the base slab. -
I've pondered pir boards with foam as the additional filler to take up the residual. I don't like the idea of the beads being blown in from outside. I think the holes required are too large and would look a bit naff. I suppose they could be blown in from the inside if drilled through the block and pir. Ideally though i'd like a DIY solution and so far the only way i've found to do bead DIY is to buy a blower machine

Thanks for the blog link. I've considered either building the inner leaf to roof height and then injecting foam from the inside, or filling behind a couple of rows of block before i resin the ties in for the next two rows.
