Ok so I could use then.. but given the strong odour, if I cover base under deck, outer cabin square 'frame' & pillars- is it not gonna spoil my sitting out or even sleeping in the cambrian alpine chalet do you think?
-
Can smooth tannalised 6x3 etc be creosoted or is it only suitable for rough-sawn timber? I'm wanting to treat the 6x3 base, & pillars etc.. but cuprionol not as effective, & twice the cost (I can source creosote @ farmers rate). I'm also wondering about the strong smell- if its not best suited to being under the cabin & under deck. Thanks, zH

Ok great I'll do that.
-
My plasterer just called- doing ceilings wednesday.. so I won't be able to put a hatch in before. The Q remains tho, is it feasable I could put one in later say next year?
-
@Onoff I'm not sure what 'normal' joists are.. mine are surprisingly thin that's all I recall. I think I'm inclined to go with Peter's view.. & just do without. But that's one damn useful link- where you find these.. Would you put one in by default then? if there's no maintenace to be done & therefore its not 'neccessary' as Peter eludes to, then the only thing I can think it useful for, apart from storing empty boxes (anything of weight is n/a if thin joists mean anything likely shoved up likely sits on the pB), is access to deal with mice.
-
No I quite agree.. storage is only viable surely if its all boarded/ thin joists too not ideal to nip about ontop of if left as is. He did need access of course to do 1st fix wiring, so we took out a 1/3rd or so pB size bit & up he went.. wondering if he's trying to twist my arm to make his 2nd fix job easier or s'thing. Anyway means I can crack on with the skim if the idea isn't a goodun. Wonder what anyone else thinks of the idea.
-
Erm.. good Q. I don't know..! Reason I ask is my spark seems to think a definite good idea (almost a 'no-brainer' in his opinion).. plus I can see that if not, then the loft is sealed: now I wonder if this causes any a future problem? IE if maintenance needed, or, if useable space for storage? As you can tell, as usual I haven't got a clue.
-
Anyone know if putting a loft hatch in (my upstairs room) is feasable to do say next year, IE once ceiling skimmed/ lights in etc? Id like to add one & I realise ideally now is far the best idea.. but my skim job is now ~ imminent (multi finish 4x bags I've bought & plasterer contacted) & I dont want to miss opportunity of him jumping in asap, if I'm faffing doing this addition. Thanks.

Anyone used these deck boards can recommend some good (not the costliest) treatment gubbins?
-
Crikey I'd fall in my stream after a few of those.. no its Bulmers for me (seriously good 4.5%). The handrail for stream side can wait now/ no urgency whilst I consider, & drink cider. I don't even think a need for other corner support (under) post either. Be nice but no kids here- nephews only possibles & they're 10+. Seriously- if my sod n'bors grandkids came over, I'd gladly push them off. Its deck tmrw.. then asap back onto my reveals sanding marathon (urgh).
-
Understand it now/ great that's easy & quick too. What posts tho? I have 3x2 & 3x3, but tannalised to hand.. be useful to use up instead of forking out for new stuff. I think maybe I'm going for -just- a 'barrier' of post/rope on my 1.4m stream-side now. Nothing on the 2.3m front: sitting 1st time on my deck, its so good its almost a shame to interrupt the 'seamless' aspect of the cantilevered deck > garden > house, even if there's a drop (only half of it anyway 'big').. you gotta be a big muppet to come a cropper.
-
@Onoff you've done me proud. Put my deck boards (loose) stuck on a chair, popped my 1st cider, evening sun.. & its a knockout! a total winner of a deck/ design/ the whole base. Perfect space for 1 to sit, good for 2, & the floaty cantilever feel works like a BOSS, so much so I'm inclined to do without front posts/rope. I think. Rock solid too of course. Your design gets 11 zootstars.. diolch Onoff.

No I was just asking if you've used it, whether it was the ~same product 'rebranded'. So you have used it.. & its not/ got that. So as Ive only 2/3rds of 1 board of pB area (my diddy block 'covering' wall).. it makes sense to up my 1/2 can soudal LE & brace it with s'thing as suggested. saving even £12 helps at the mo. It doesn't have to be perfect here. thanks.
-
Understood.. so you've never used the soudal board-fix-foam specific stuff? looks pretty similar I must say. Its just the moisture in it & its only adhesion being its paper that concerns me. I got 1 board to do it/ must prep & do it once & right. This plastering-reveals & doors etc is holding me up hugely. Not only hugely time consuming (3x the pB job itself & all the sanding to do yet).. but the plasters taking 3-4 days to dry. I don't understand it. Ive gotta sand, then redo another coat & another few days to dry > start main sanding.. its almost unbearable. I'm sure I'm not doing something right here.
-
Ok must remember to turbo the lower one inside out, once boards on. Just cuprinol'd the joist/ nog tops & all the joints.. not enough left for whole shebang, & must crack on with deck tmrw. Ok so now I'm onto these posts. I understand how to fix them, good. But how I could rout the top/ sides to make nice.. I've no idea tho: what were you thinking as possible plan of attack/ result? a dome top or s'thing? Ok 1st thing is what kind of post do you suggest? rough tannalised 3x3, is that the idea? if I could get a plan together today I could get tmrw.
-
Ive cuprinol'd the noggin ends, but that's it. I thought being tannalised, its been done no-?
-
Right so now I'm waiting on screws.. I can think on the posts/ rope idea. Got 12 deck boards cut (rough) to 2.4m. So once tidied up that's only 7cm more than width of my base they're going onto. Ok so when you say coach bolt, do you mean these turbos I have? Thanks, zoot.
-
I tell thee.. this click/ collect screwfix baloney arses me off. I do it & dive in a few hrs later (no mob works here) & usually pick up xyz fine. Or if its not in my branch, tells me so/ I'm aware/ & choose to drive 70m for a tub of flippin plaster from the next branch (saturday). This time I go in for my deck screws "not in yet.. tomorrow p/u.. you assumed blah blah". So my a'noon's work shot & have to drive in tmrw. I think its correct to assume if I "click/ collect" nothing tellling me beforehand its not in stock, & I've paid.. it should be there to p/u!! argh!!
-
Understood.. but isn't it far easier cutting them flush tho-? What I'm asking actually I think, is how the post/ rope idea works. have I got it right saying the posts attatch as I've outlined? I have no idea you see.. I'm only assuming this might be the idea.
-
But if I've got my posts/ rope plan to do afterwards.. shouldn't I be cutting them flush with edge of the base-? I mean surely the posts/ rope idea, is fix posts with say 2x turbos each, to the outside of the base-? if the boards overlap, posts can't do so.
-
Another ace idea.. understood. Thanks.
-
Actually cheap as chips- £5 from screwfix, didn't expect that. Ok doing job today/ picking up boards (across 2320mm) in a bit. Is the idea to skilsaw cut the ends in situ, absolutely flush with the joist side? I do have joist hangar tops in places (& wondering if they'll scupper the height of some boards ends too/ raising a few ends 'up') so perhaps not. Thanks chaps.
-
Do 'decking screws' need to be used.. or is that something I can save some£ on ?
-
Hi ProDave- Aha understood. actually I don't know, my level isn't accurate enough to say! I think its got to be a chance-thing if it runs off ok. thanks.
-
The fall.. me only understand Mark.E.Smith. Can you elaborate ProDave?
