VAT Claim in
lizzie replied to lizzie's topic in Self Build VAT, Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), S106 & Tax
I got an acknowledgment from HMRC that they are happy that I have submitted all they require to start procesing the claim, now 6 weeks (but more like 8 on current timecsczles I’m told) for them to go through each individual invoice etc. Carry on keeping those fingers crossed please. -
Me I guess but base has been down 4 months and was done by the contractor who laid our 70m tarmac acess road and he liased with resin people on spec so fingers crossed. Tarmac man called in on another matter yesterday while resin was being done they all seemed happy...lets hope it stays that way.

Thanks for that Jeremy, an avenue to explore?
-
@JSHarris that may well be true but I’m not prepared to risk it I will find another solution that is compatible with manufacturers guidelines and warranty conditions.
-
Its 10 on the glazing longer on the frames in the warranty book it tells you to avoid attaching ‘foils and paints’ after....this includes films. They suggest shading with blinds or overhangs.
-
and when office is contacted with glass spec the answer comes back no. I dont have pilkington glass I have Internorm supplied glass. They say no too and I am not about to ignore the weight of professional expert opinion and experiment with thousands of pounds of glass and void my Internorm warranty. I may be foolish in lots of ways but not with this - window film is something that I have extensively researched and each time I get the same answer back so I will not ignore it.

If they are supply and fit they should not charge you vat on anything other than appliances - you cant claim vat on appliances - if they are supply only you can claim the vat back on everything except the appliances
-
Thank you @Ian page 1 item 4 in the notes - if your window is triple glazed please avoid fitting window film.

@Mr Punter god knows I just bought what internorm salesman said. I knew nothing about the technicalities he told me laminated was more secure so I had it. Cost more than toughened too. Are your development doors toughened or laminated? my overheating is an issue on south and west elevations, west is worse than south on mine. If you are toughened then the film world is your oyster. I can look out some msq prices I got. The films I have all seem to have a slighly blue/grey tinge, that is the ‘clear’ option. Top price is 3m with other brands about 20% cheaper for pretty much same spec I found. Incidentally I had external condensation on the two major problem windows this morning, first time since about April.
-
Who knows but one of the opinions comes from 3m suppliers of Jeremys film. 3 installers have refused to fit film after initally quoting then checking spec of my glass and saying sorry not on that glass.....one said if pressed they would fit but only if signed all sorts of waivers and disclaimers, who would be mad enough to subject tens of thousands of pounds of intenorm glass to that and void their internorm warranty too. The toughening process changes the glass structure and that makes is less vulnerable to heat stress. Laminated and float are not heated, laminated just has the lamination added to glass...float.....that lamination process gives no heat stress protection and film even external causes heat stress. I have been quizzed not only on the specific glass I have but the aspect, orientation, overangs and shading from trees etc. The questions from different people have essentially been the same which tells me there is some sort of guide. I am given to understand that laminate is more prone to cracking than toughened even without film.....and I had laminated as I wanted the extra security I had no idea it would be such an issue.
-
The reason they wont use it on laminated or float is that is that those types of glass have not been heat treated like toughened. They are very specific about it laminated and float glass are different animals to toughened which has been heat treated and so not vulnerable to the stress in the same way as non heat treated glass, they all say they the same they can’t all be wrong. If you look around you will find this information on glazing federation etc web sites....laminated and float glass are most definately not deemed suitable for any external film Toughened can have any film you like and get the sort of results you get with no risk of cracking. The heat treatment changes the structure of the glass somehow I think and makes it tough and not prone to heat stress. The opinions i have had are for external film, internal was never considered an option.
-
I can only cite what 4 independent sources have told me...3 film supplier/manufacturers and the glass providers themselves Do you have laminated glass @JSHarris ?
-
it is the stress caused by the heat - laminated and float glass are not heat tempered as toughened is and the heat build up from film causes stress......thats a short version of a very technical answer from 3m an other film supplier and my glazing via Internorm
-
Well thats an end to the window film quest for me. The definitive answer is no window film is suitable for my laminated spec glass. The chances of the glass cracking are near certain. Window film (of any brand) is not suitable for my laminated or for float glass. If you have toughened glass then you will be fine with film as it has been heat treated so the stresses are removed. For me now its back to praying for cooler weather whilst I try to find a blind solution that wil work at a sensible price too.

7k for the resin. His quote was higher but we did a deal at 7k. I put the base and edging in ready and they did the resin. I had other quotes some cheaper but their work was not as good as this man. I have a 25 year insurance backed guarantee with this installer.

Resin all done in a morning 6 of them laid 160sqm by lunchtime. Its looks amazing, cant do a close inspection as cant walk on it just yet but from where I can see it looks the bees knees. Very pleased.

I think costs have moved on since @JSHarris build. Last year ours was about half as much again as Jeremys quoted psm price for frame/slab. They were not the cheapest quote nor were they the most expensive. Price was not the decider for us I preferred another which was more expensive but we were talked into having the one we went with on their good customer reviews and track record but sadly in our case it was not as it should be guess there are always some....I once had a ‘Friday afternoon’ car.......maybe thats what I got in house terms who knows
-
I like your style!
-
@pudding I have a set up with Hikvision cameras, very pleased with them and the installer had them sprayed to match my soffits so the are very low impact visually.
-
The other thing to consider is all the insulation etc can cause problems with wifi, dead spots etc. Not usually a problem in older houses but in our new state of the art cosy warm insulated spaces can be an issue. I cant get wifi in my office (aka bed 3) of all places but thankfully I am cat cabled so hardwired.
-
My nephew has a system like this with cameras he loves it. Was from Amazon and really good price.

The TF supplier did the slab and frame. The 'fix' was for about 140 bags self leveller and labour for floorlayer to put it down - that mostly dealt with dips and humps on the slab inside the house....it cost more in the end and as floorlayer said he could never get it level he only try and get it 'flat'. Lopsided out of square frame was never addressed and we have had to compensate for this ourselves with cosmetic treatment on elevations and packing under top roof trusses where dip was in flat deck etc . It has cost us a lot of time and money. I guess once frame was up not much could be done but as far as I know no offer to attempt to rectify that was ever made. I really don't want to reopen what was a fairly horrific experience for me in more ways than one. There are complications with the PM/TF supplier relationship that I was unaware of at the time (and that is a relationship that is ongoing) . I just want to put it to bed no-one is going to do anything for me for all the problems/shoddy work. I am just left put of pocket with a sour taste about those involved. I can only say that without the help of my superstar carpenter and one or two others (and you guys on here) I truly do not know where I would have ended up with this (in the loony bin I suspect...is that expression PC now?) I know where the issues lay in terms of the TF but the outside world would not know now unless they looked hard and structurally it is sound so I am trying to leave it behind me and focus on what is now (to my eye) a very beautiful house that I am immensely pleased with... we got there in spite of not because of too......just wish sorting all these cock ups had not cost us so much stress, extra time and £'s. I feel foolish - yes I was naive and trusting but no more - If ever I am mad enough to do this again I will use brick and block as I have more faith in it as something I could look at myself and check as it was happening.
