Thanks Temp. I'll have a look through.

Ok, but that process is right? This is what I'm thinking. 600mm wide/deep trench Fabric 100mm chippings P/pipe inside sock 200mm+ chippings over the top Envelope with fabric Topsoil.
-
Just watched this and it worked great. Is this what would be recommended or is it overkill? Thanks.
-
This is obviously the easier way to do it (dig a trench and fill with Chipping's). However, doing it the way Stewpot says and using a sock seems to be the most thorough way. What I don't want though is to over think it, do to much and it doesn't work properly.

Thanks Ed. I'm thinking of doing it the way Stewpot explained. I have a run of about 50m across the back of the site and the ground keeps sloping up behind this. I have to put fencing across the whole length as well, but I'm concerned that the excess water may start washing away the fence posts. My plan was to put a drain on the neighbours ground about a metre away from the boundary fence. This will then remove a lot of water that would have soaked the ground around the footings of the posts. I would then put another drain about a metre away from the boundary fence on my side. I was thinking of using a 600mm wide/deep trench to make sure it's enough and I don't have to increase it at a later date. If the neighbour is not happy with me digging on his ground, the only other thing I can think of is to dig the post holes deeper and fill the bottom with gravel to help soak away the excess water. I haven't come across this before, so it's all new to me.

Hi Stewpot. That looks like a thorough way of doing it. I want to get this done right first time, so I don't have to dig it all up if it blocks in the future.

Hi joe90. My understanding, is that a french drain is perforate pipe with stone. Are you saying that you can just fill the trench with stone and this is also called a french drain? Thanks.
-
Hi. I am looking for some advice on what to use for land drains. I have a sloping plot and need to divert water into a watercourse in the centre of the plot. I'm wondering if it would be better to use perforated pipe (french drain) in multiple places or a bigger culvert at the top of the plot. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi. I am thinking of buying a digger as it will not work out that much more if I hired one. I have looked through the checklist and the main point is having somebody with knowledge to inspect it. I’m not experienced at all with what to be checking, so I’d prefer someone who is to do that. Has anyone heard of Graham’s Dawson plant services in Derbyshire? Also what is the correct term for somebody who inspects them? Thanks.

The ground is very wet at the moment from water that is coming from the land behind. I need to put in drains at the back of the ground and have them running into the centre of the plot, where it will run into the watercourse. Hopefully this will solve the soggy ground issue, but it looks like it’s the way to go with the gabions. Thanks very much.

It looks like I’ll be doing gabions. I did a quick calculation and I’ll be saving around 4K on the labour. Thanks

Hi. I am thinking of using gabion baskets for all the retaining walls, but would like to know how they compare to a wall built from concrete blocks. I would have to pay a bricklayer to build the walls from block, but I could excavate and pour the foundations myself. If I used gabions I could do the lot from start to finish, so would save on labour. However, it seems like a lot of material is used in each basket. I would partition the basket, so the front 1/4 had cosmetic stone. It looks very time consuming using baskets, so I would like to know whether there is much of a difference in cost. Thanks.

It isn’t my lane. I’m not sure where they would be responsible. They are taking a 30% retainer from me until 3 months after completion, so Does that mean they are taking responsibility. They haven’t stated what materials to use, that is up to the company that I had quote for the job originally which are welsh water approved contractors. They have specified 110mm pvc drainage, but not specified the chambers.

Hi. I’ll be getting my sewerage drainage laid in a few weeks time and just wanted to check a few things. There will be a total of around 40m running down a lane before it gets connected into the lateral drain. I just want to make sure that standard orange soil pipe is good enough to use in a public lane. There isn’t a large amount of traffic, but I will also be using this lane for deliveries. Should 6” be used? There are 2 chambers going to be used in the lane, what chambers should be used? Thanks.

Thanks for sharing your experience (even though it's terrible). I will definitely be wearing a respirator as the man i bought the plot off had cancer a couple of years ago. He has been spraying glyphosate on this plot for the last 15 years and believes it was from that stuff. I'll keep my dog off it for as long as I can. Thanks. -

I have bought some 360 glyphosate and a backpack sprayer. I have a half mask respirator, but I'm unsure if it has the correct filters, what should I be getting to not breath this stuff in? Should I also be staying away from it for a bit and keeping the dog away? Thanks. -

I was planning to clear the site in 3 weeks. How long after I've sprayed it (with either glyphosate or salt) would I need to leave it before digging it up? -

I'll need some type of sprayer as the area is quite big. Is it better to spray the plant or clear the site and then spray the earth? -

So spraying it all with a chemical is the most efficient way of stopping this? I'll have a look for sodium chlorate, but if I can't find it what's the next best thing? -

I haven't treated it at all. I just started to clear it up with an excavator as it was like a jungle and theres also tall himalayan balsam as well. -
Hi. My building plot is around 1/4 acre and I have cleared half of it, where I am going to be building. However grass and weeds have completely grown through again over the whole area. The mound that has been created from it is going to be used on the other area to level off where the garden will be. This also, is completely covered by weeds and grass. I'd like to get some advice on the best way of permanently stop this from continuing to grow. Thanks.
