Long + narrow, single storey barn, our chosen layout.
newhome replied to Jenni's topic in New House & Self Build Design
That would work pretty well I think. It would definitely work better for me than having muddy dogs in the main bathroom 24 x 7. An external mixer tap is an even better idea however if it’s just for dogs and cleaning boots. -
I’m on the Economy 2000 tariff that they no longer offer but I am left with the legacy of having a weird meter system that ties me to Scottish Power. How do I align boiler times to the E10 times? The boiler times are dictated by whether the UFH calls for heat afaik, although I can set the DHW times specifically so maybe that would word. Once bitten and all that, do the Economy tariffs use ordinary meters? I am going to write to Ofgem and ‘thank’ them for the big price rise and point out that their analysis was that Scottish Power was one of the companies that exceeded the cap the most so the ‘saving’ if you were with Scottish Power was likely to be more significant.

I will need to get the CUs ripped out presumably and replaced before I can do that? I'm guessing that only a single CU can be connected to a single meter? I'm trying really hard to not feel like they've done this to me because of the ombudsman case but given that they don't publish this tariff I have no way of knowing ...
-
Disappointing when you make the decision to pay a bit more to get better quality and it doesn't work out as you envisaged ...

A while ago on this forum the price cap that Ofgem has introduced was discussed. I wasn’t sure what it would mean for me but I wasn’t expecting a huge increase, however today I learned that my ‘heating’ tariff is rising by 77% as a result. Ouch! Bearing in mind that in Jan 18 I was paying 6.132p and that’s increasing to 14.468p in Jan 19. So it’s more than doubled in a year! I’m paying 8.157p at present. The letter is wrong as they haven’t returned me to the tariff I should be on and the ombudsman has instructed them to return me to, but that rate ends in Dec so I suspect that I will be shoved onto this rate in January. What are people paying on a ‘normal’ tariff for electricity? Their letter says that I can switch supplier without having to change my meter but I assume that means ‘if you can find another supplier that will accept you’. Given that I have 2 meters here do I have any options other than getting the whole lot ripped out and rewired? Originally the numbers didn’t quite stack up to install an ASHP but now I’m thinking that might be more feasible. @PeterW fancy a weekend of McEwans and bacon? ?

They blamed migrants for kitchen damage!? That's an inventive excuse I guess. Does make them sound like arses though .

Wow, that's a lovely kitchen! You've made an ace job of that! Stunning.

The tale of the sale of our old house
newhome replied to Jeremy Harris's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Glad the old house has finally gone. Always a weight off your mind once completion day is over, and in your case without the stress of moving out of one home and into another all on the same day. -
Christ on a bike that looks rough not smooth! Still, whatever turns you on I guess! ? ?
-
Well if they’re no good for tiling you can use them to make your arse as soft as a baby ... ?

This doesn’t entirely apply to you but it’s worth having a read as firstly Croydon were awkward plus it does mention offsetting of floor area. -
Even more cheapskate then! ?

I didn’t expect it to save 50% but you’re right a 25% saving is not insignificant on an all electric system. There is MVHR here but I’ve no real clue as to how that’s set up TBH plus I can’t actually get to it currently (another job on the to do list!). And yes I do use it like 2 semis! I literally only use that side of the house if I have visitors. That’s the consequence of having a house that’s way too large for just me. It does however give me food for thought for when I move house ?

Nope! Having experienced it taking several days to bring my heating up to 20 degrees when I was away last Christmas it’s definitely not. The heating wasn’t working properly then so I had no choice but I hope to set the controller so that the heating comes on 24 hours before I am due to return this year. Will be luxury if it works lol. What determines how low a house’s temperature will drop to with no heating on? In the side of the house that I don’t use the temperatures both upstairs and down are just over 11 degrees. The heating is off in those rooms but the frost setting is set to 10 so they won’t drop below that. The bedroom that is not heated behind mine is the same temperature as mine but I imagine that’s because it’s above the room where the TS is and the hot pipes go up into a cupboard in that room (I think!). The rooms that are not heated between the cold side of the house and the warm side are somewhere between the 2. I seem to recall that the temperature in here has been in single figures before however ... ❄️❄️❄️

Clearly you managed to be even more cheap than @Nickfromwales could have anticipated then ?. Baby wipes are so cheap anyway it’s not worth saving the extra half pence IMO ?.

I’m with you re the bedrooms TBH. I have space to sit in mine but never do, and nor is there a TV up there so I’m not particularly bothered about light or views. That said, when I view a house the master bedroom looking fabulous with space, light and views can create a wow factor ?. An en-suite is a must have for me. Love a bathroom that I can use without needing to exit the bedroom and is my own domain. My mother sounds a bit like yours. When my father needed mobility provision made she ripped it all out when he died ‘as she didn’t want or need it’. She wouldn’t have entertained a conversation about keeping it for the future but 15 years on she’s now having similar stuff put in again ?. When my husband was ill we were glad of the wet room we had put downstairs as it meant that he could remain independent. We hadn’t expected to need it for a person (it was mainly installed for the dogs lol) so you can never predict how things will work out. -
You mean the cheapskate ones are crap! What a shock ?.

If that happened here I would use 6kw every hour. I don’t think it would as the room temps don’t drop that much, if at all, in an hour. When the boiler fires once a day it takes an hour to an hour and a half to reach the temp that the cylinder stats are set to, so that’s between 24 and 36kw. I can’t see it being less than that (or the same) if the heating is set to be a constant temperature. May have to try it over a few days and check however I don’t have a snazzy way of monitoring it so it will be rough and ready from meter readings (heating / DHW is on a different meter so I can work that out ok at least).

What do you use for heating? Tank or direct to UFH? My worry about running it continuously is that the boiler will continually top up the 475l TS to keep it at temperature if the UFH continually calls for heat in order to keep the temperature constant. My theory is that I don't need it so hot during the day so it can just boost it to 20 downstairs in the evening and then that's enough to keep the house at an OK temperature until the following evening. 23 degrees would be roasting IMO! It got to 24c in the summer and during the hottest weather and that was way too hot for me.

Downstairs in the evening 20c. It then switches off and doesn't come back on unless it drops to 16c which doesn't happen as it only drops a max of < 2 degrees until the following evening at current temperatures so the lowest it drops to is circa 18.5c currently. I have the bedroom at 17c, again only in the evening and it switches off overnight. It's still 16.5c when I get up in the morning generally and back up to 17c when I go to bed. I don't have a constant temperature here throughout the day as I'm either not here or doing 'stuff' during the day so don't need it back on again until the evening. I have all of the rooms that I don't use switched off (on frost setting of 10c). Went into the lounge earlier to get something. I don't use that whole side of the house at all so nothing is heated over there and it was 11.5c, bloody baltic lol. Just across the hall the rooms I use are toasty warm at 20c. I'm glad I have lots of zones as it would be mental to heat all of the rooms here when I don't set foot in 2 thirds of them. I'm on an electric system so have to be mindful about the cost. Using it the way I do keeps the bills reasonable.

Well that’s not good enough really. They must be able to tell you what the policy is. I found this freedom of information request. It didn’t get answered as it said the information was available elsewhere but maybe you could ask via that route (and cite that you have already unsuccessfully asked the council for the policy). https://www.whatdotheyknow.com/request/section_106_obligation_request -
Maybe it’s a perception that the current air in the room isn’t ‘fresh’ enough so it’s an attempt to fast track its replacement ?. Dunno, it’s a question for @joe90 to ask his Mrs ?
