Sorry to hear about your BIL @nod and yes, maybe the views of disabled people should be taken into account more rather than blindly following rules, especially since you have a disabled person about to move in who is fine with using the other entrance. The inspectors get really het up about the word level though.
  3. That makes it a nonsense surely? Why on earth can’t that access be used? Sounds perfect. There is no way someone disabled would choose to live in my house. The parking is at the side and is quite a distance from both front and back doors.
  4. With 1 : 12 the ramp can only be 2 metres long. 1 : 15 it can be 5m and 1 : 20 it can be 10m.

As @nod says there is a maximum gradient allowed and there is a maximum ramp length too, so because of this and the rise from the pavement to the front door it meant that I needed 2 ramps connected together to make the required height. https://www2.gov.scot/resource/buildingstandards/2017Domestic/chunks/ch05s04.html
  6. They are pretty strict about needing one so don't rely on being exempt. Haven't you needed to show it on the plans? I had to snake mine up and down to meet the gradient requirements.
  7. Different yes but mostly the same, it's just that the disabled access is one of the things they are really hot on up here. There are a ton of things he never checked here that seem a bit more important to me but that's the way of these things I guess. They all have their pet topics and up here the ramp thing is one of them. Pain in the ass to be honest.

  11. We had 2 Karchers in the past, both of which went wrong for various reasons. Replaced the last one with a Nilfisk and am very happy with it. Much of a muchness though I think.

Ah yes well it's always one person whose actions spoil the party for everyone else, and I agree it makes me much less likely to open accounts with any organisations that I don't have a financial relationship with already as I can't be bothered with the hassle. That said, when I opened an account with a challenger bank recently everything was done electronically in next to no time. I think the banks have made progress in respect of anti money laundering processes etc. Gone are the days where they will accept a massive pile of used notes from a bag marked swag . It's a constant battle however with those determined to defraud coming up with more and more inventive ways to do so, and cyber security adding another complex dimension compared to a more straightforward era when we all used a cheque book and pen.
  14. Not like that now. These days it can sometimes be difficult for people to deposit legitimately earned money. That’s not to say that the system is perfect but banks make a huge effort to ensure than staff understand anti money laundering measures and processes, sanctions and the like. And to spot signs of bribery and corruption and to act upon them.

  17. Go for it as a garden extension then. It may increase the value of your parent's house anyway as a garden extension even if you can't get PP just now (and assuming you can afford to just buy it speculatively).

  19. Are you sure that planning permission hasn't been applied for before by the owner and refused? If planning permission is possible I wonder why they haven't got it themselves, or they may just not want to sell / develop the land yet. I think your only chance is to speak to the landowner. Alternatively maybe your parents could approach them and say that they would like to buy it to extend their garden or similar, and not mention building on it initially.
  20. It's also called a garnishee order (or it is in the English courts). The court can also put in place an attachment of earnings order that requires an employer to settle the debt as a third party. An attachment of earnings is not likely to be appropriate in the case of a rogue builder however as it cannot be put in place for the self employed or the unemployed, and you have to earn over a certain amount too which is based on how much you need to live on, or a 'protected' amount.

  22. Not quite the same but a warning to remove tape on window frames when they are installed like it says. We left ours on for protection while the build was still going on and it was the nightmare from hell trying to remove it afterwards once the UV had cured it. I ended up scraping it off a mm at a time with an old credit card. Nightmare job! No chemicals I tried touched it, and I tried a few.
  23. Unfortunately even when the individual has a registered company and doesn’t move house there seems to be little anyone can do to get any money back. There is a guy up here who sets a company up, takes money off people for kitchens and bathrooms and either fails to deliver or the work is of a shocking quality. He then sets up a new company with a similar name and dissolves the previous one. Those who have tried to take him to court have been told that he has no assets, not even a vehicle, so they end up with nothing.
  24. Throw in enough space to accommodate a lift or a stairlift (so check the design of the staircase) and that should cover mobility issues too. Or incorporate a room downstairs plus shower room that could eventually be used as a bedroom.
