The Build - Scaffolding ahead of TF arriving
newhome commented on Redoctober's blog entry in Our Journey North of the Border
So your timber frame should be there today. All going well I hope! It’s the best time of the build IMO watching it go up. Enjoy! -
I’ve stuck it on the local sites and await the first person to ask if I will deliver even though the ad is explicit
-
27 cuts to get that small enough to fit into the car? Blimey I’ll be there a long time! Bolt cutters sound more appealing if I don’t get any takers from the freecycle route. There might even be some in the garage, will need to have a look.
-
I’m the opposite in that I see them as too dangerous and don’t really like them in truth. I won’t look when anyone climbs up a ladder onto a roof or uses what I consider to be a ‘dangerous’ power tool such as a circular saw or a chainsaw. That didn’t exactly provide him with the confidence that I should use any power tools. I can cut myself on a knife or fall off a stepladder and smash my head in (have form with both!). That said I do need to be able to use ‘simple’ power tool such as a drill to do the most basic of jobs here so need to learn. It just would have been handy having someone here helping me learn rather than replying on YouTube videos. Im not suddenly going to use the more dangerous ones as I’m sure that could end badly.
-
What would I use as my reason for a return? I’m too pathetic to use them? I hate that I can’t use tools / do things actually but the OH always did it and actively discouraged me from using any power tools.
-
I’m good to buy them if needed (think Aldi has some cheap ones on offer but not sure if they are the right size), just not sure how strong you need to be to use them.

A day we thought would never come.

That looks fabulous! Must give you great incentive to get the inside looking stunning too. -
Occasionally get pikeys at the beach but nothing here has ever gone missing even when in full view of the gate. People have had heating oil and a sheepdog stolen from round here, and farm machinery. Other than that it's not exactly Crimewatch worthy here.

I've got a dremel, would that do it or too small? I doubt anyone else will offer to come up after the 16 hour days sorting out the heating!
-
Thanks all. Option 1, ie the easiest - put on freecycle and ask if anyone wants it (waiting for the 'can you deliver' comments ) Option 2 see if I have a bolt cutter, can borrow one, can ask someone to help me if I am pathetic and can't work it Option 3 try the angle grinder and pray I don't amputate anything as I don't have a manky finger or toe that warrants it. Next question - what do I say it is? Steel grid? It's not mega rusty - just brown I think.
-
Yeah the photo didn't load first time and you were too fast . Thanks, will see if I can borrow bolt cutters from next door. Do I need to be superhuman to work them?
-
The metal thing ....
-
Need to take it to the tip so how can I chop it up? ie what can I use that isn’t dangerous? Angle grinder? Never used one before mind and don’t know if there is one here.

The Build - Scaffolding ahead of TF arriving

Ouch that’s a lot for the scaffolding! Mind you my experience with scaffolding wasn’t the best and I would have rather paid a little more after all the hassle we had with ours. Just make sure no one goes on it until the ‘ticket’ is on it if it’s not there already. Car port is looking great! -

Just looked at Panic at the Disco. First thing that came up was a Bohemian Rhapsody cover . -

Can’t warm to techno at all. Suggest something that might convert me. Not a lover of rap either. Give me something like The Clash any day! -
Is this a way of getting out of finishing the bathroom? Re the cherry tree, can’t you buy a new one and plant it somewhere where it won’t be in the way of your current house / patio but also any future house if you went the new build route? You must have a view of the best location for a new house on that plot. By the time you get round to making any potential new house a reality the new tree will be bearing fruit and nuking the old one might not seem so bad. Firs aren’t generally the sort of trees worth protecting are they? So unless they’re not in the way I’d plan to get shot of those. Again nothing stopping you from planting more trees at the extremity of the plot, or further away from any building or potential building at least. If you have half an acre there must be scope for trees?

I know what you mean. I am not looking forward to selling this either especially as it will cost me a stack more to buy a house in the south again. There are so many new developments in the nearest town there is an abundance of houses for sale and my one is just slightly outside what people consider to be a reasonable commute even tho I do it regularly as do many others in the village. It's certainly less of a commute than many people travelling to London.

Another "what's the correct name" plumbing question
newhome replied to ProDave's topic in General Plumbing
My system was full of shit and a magnetic filter was put in recently. It kept knackering the boiler when it filled up with crap. Is this anything like what you are looking for (it's not a bottle as such .....). https://www.tradecounterdirect.com/plumbing-tools/plumbing-valve/eezyfill-central-heating-dosin_type.html -
Hubby used to fit automated gates when we lived down south. I think he tended to fit BFT and CAME. You possibly already know but there was a ton of legislation introduced when 2 children were crushed to death by automated gates in separate incidents a few years ago. Whatever you buy should meet safety standards and the person who installs the automation should be ‘competent’ and fully understand all of the regulations. They are considered to be machinery and are governed by the machinery directive. They can be dangerous beasts if not installed and operating correctly.
