The research evidence on security alarms
epsilonGreedy replied to Adsibob's topic in Networks, AV, Security & Automation
My car is too low-tech to benefit, however I like the idea of a Faraday pouche because I understand we are overdue for the next Carrington Event. Following a mega solar flare I assume the last working iphone in Lincolnshire would be quite valuable. -

I have been rumbled. I did not believe what I wrote, my intention was to illustrate the viewpoint of an IB protester. One response above did expose the complacency of those who subscribe to climate change alarmism as a fashion statement but don't want to be truly inconvenienced. Those who subscribe to climate alarmism must by definition believe the world will be a horrible place by the end of the century given current climatic trends, we are talking about 1930's dust-bowl america on a global scale. The world population has risen 3 fold since the 1930s and it is unlikely a dust bowl Earth could support 7.2 billion humans in the year 2100. In this context we are predicting a world where 10s or 100s of millions or even a billion humans have met an untimely end to their lives by 2100. If so IB actions to effect urgent change are reasonable and rational. I actually think the world community is making impressive changes to de-carbonize and we will get to net zero within 80 years. By that time ppm will be 500 and the climate will be exhibiting a few minor reactions to high co2, some beneficial and some negative. What concerns me with the current over hyped hysteria re. climate change is that when we try but fail to reduce co2 emissions within 10 years and the climate continues to skip merrily along, people will reject the whole premise of co2 reduction. A counter culture might develop as people across the globe reject the economic hardships of an authoritarian panic response to climate change. In a scenario of rising co2, economic hardship and a pleasant climate the whole net zero mission might be shelved as a discredited early 21st century scientific snake-oil. -

After a 45 second speed read, the project team does look credible. Their roadmap claims they are just 3 years away from commercial scale demonstration which is a vast improvement on anything to do with nuclear fusion power. -

Not heard of that before. After some Googling it is an exploit of a convenience technology developed for those who expect their car to unlock automatically as they approach their car. I think these ingenious criminals should be offered senior roles to sort out public sector IT. -
Is 4.6m deep enough if this structure aspires to be an enclosed clad garage in the future? I reckon 5m is a minimum viable depth for a garage. My non expert hunch is that the central 4.6m rafter running between the bays should be one size up.

We are also rural, no problem with mice. I skirted my static with 11mm osb wood chip sheets and put some extra effort into creating a drip tray along the top to prevent rain running down inside the skirt. A solid framed skirt helps stabilize the static during winter storms. Do you have hardcore footpaths outside?

Third winter for us, a sheepskin blanket is our winter favourite. At this time of year we can save £50 on the monthly heating bill using a portable electric heater. In December and January we burn through three to four 47kg bottles a month keeping the whole static warm via radiator gas centre heating. Best leave the vents to do their job namely keeping you alive with oxygen. Some of ours were blocked by the previous owner but there are just two of us and we have removed the gas fireplace, which is a calculated risk I am comfortable with. You will aclimatise, getting up in the morning to 10 degrees seems normal now.

AFP alluminium guttering. An ok business?

Swmbo is going to love stand on the staging with her hot air dryer directed at the plastic. Anyhow I have only put up 3 meters so far. -

Gutter Creast looks ideal, not seen their product before, thanks. The beaded half round version in a dimpled paint finish would work very well. Just a shame the brackets have a single screw hole at the very top which leads me back to the prooblem I raised yesterday about how to fix such a bracket behind the eave support tray drip lip. Mine drops down 70mm from the top of the fascia. -

I was tempted for a few minutes, oxidized green copper guttering above a buff brick mix and under grey natural slate would look good. However the other copper guttering components are very price, £20 for each bracket I think. I have 48 linear meters to fix. -
Exterior grade filler for wooden eaves.
epsilonGreedy replied to epsilonGreedy's topic in Building Materials
I the end I visited my local "4 candles" no "fork handles" traditional hardware store and decided with the shop owner to buy white "No Nails" mastic glue. I hope woodpeckers do not have a taste for it. I saw a demo block of wood featuring holes filled with the Ronseal 2-part product. Impressive stuff and appears to sand down a smooth finish, I might use it for the soffit holes. -

Just as likely he is your typical media celebrity who craves a stage and a spotlight. He just changed his spots because he found retirement difficult to handle. -
The price of heritage cast aluminium gutter has gone crazy. Marley Alutec is £50 inc for 1.8m lengths and the same length of ALUMASC HERITAGE HALF ROUND CAST ALUMINIUM GUTTERS is £78 inc. My internet search has found AFP of Worksop, Nottinghamshire who claim to do their own casting of gutter components. Can anyone comment on this business? https://aluminiumfabricationproducts.co.uk/about-us

Has anyone experienced a problem fitting gutter brackets to a fascia because of the drop of the eave support tray? My fascia is only 120mm high and although the basic slate overhang and gutter fixing geometry should work in practice, the drop of the drip portion of the eave support tray is causing me problems. I have only fixed 3m of eave support tray and so I am now considering fixing the gutter support brackets before fitting the eave support tray and slates. This would require some precise calculation to ensure the gutter and slate overhang will align nicely on completion.

Half of the items would typically involve bringing in other trades. Is this 5 man team multi talented? It sounds as though you are weather tight with little more than internal stud work? If so you are probably 65% done. Is the stairs in? Guttering? If water is poured down an internal soil pipe upstand where does it go? Given the budget overrun and the accommodation crisis is it time to consider moving into a part complete home?

Could this lead to a Clive Pontin type court case where a jury refuse to convict a manifest crime against an IB road blocker. -
Exterior grade filler for wooden eaves.

Sounds like a good solution for a neat finish on the soffit holes but I was hoping for something a bit more adhesive and flexible for the fascias. -

Could you be more specific about what state is worsening? -
I have been fitting the soffits and fascias for my traditional wooden eaves. After a trial fit of the eave support tray I have realized the gutter drip tray portion of the support tray will obscure the presently unfilled countersunk screw holes of the eave fixings. My Question: I am looking for a premium grade filler for these fixing holes, something that will keep the damp and rot out for a decade or two. Any suggestions? I might need a different filler for the soffit fixing holes because these will be on display and hence I would like to sand the filler down and paint over. The eaves are currently painted offwhite with a linseed paint.

I find myself in the unusual position of articulating the climate alarmist position. If we accept the consensus view on global warming then by the end of the century sea levels could be 1 to 2m higher and the temperature 2 to 4 degrees higher than the pre industrial era. The alarmists also believe such a world will be ravaged by more extreme weather with hurricanes, fires, droughts, floods and agricultural failures on a biblical scale. Such a world would likely see 100's of millions of humans dying early in life and billions living in misery. The BBC wants me to believe the sky will catch fire as the world spontaneously combusts. Given such an outlook IB actions are rational. Based on current CO2 emission reduction progress we are unlikely to see net zero CO2 emissions eliminated within 50 years and global CO2 PPM will rocket towards 500. An emergency UK national insulation programme is the most effective route to reduce CO2 emissions by 2030. On balance which is more important, the death of a stroke victim or millions of avoidable deaths by the end of the century? But co2 ppm continues to rise. You are guilty of the same dishonesty you just alleged. You want to be in the cool gang of climate change alarmism but you are not prepared to enact the changes necessary to avoid a biblical climatic catastrophe that your gang predicts. I agree, most look like thrill seeking early retirees. They probably worked in the public sector in some clip board hugging role and have natural authoritarian tendencies. -
Do retrofit ASHPs need larger pipes to the rads?
epsilonGreedy replied to Ferdinand's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
That is a smart move by the Government because it creates a more viable pathway to ASHP conversion in future years and will also also encourage some house designers to improve insulation rather than increase radiator size. -

Your post prompted me to visit GridWatch for some definitions. Biomass generation is categorized as a renewable but not carbon neutral apparently, though arguably biomass is carbon neutral over a couple of centuries. Eco is just a vague catch all phrase which must explain why @Jeremy Harriswas so offended by the label, it must have sent his cranial neurons into a recursive definition not found loop. https://gridwatch.co.uk/renewables https://gridwatch.co.uk/carbon-neutral -

I think Insulate Britain has achieved a fabulous return on investment as would be perceived by marketing campaign executive.
