Klover pellet swallower!

Tonight we have moved in to the house, it’s not what my idea of moving in would be there’s stuff everywhere and still no staircase as we await it’s arrival sometime in the next few days, but we have a bed a sofa and a fully functioning kitchen and toilets hopefully I’ll get sorted out before Xmas! The move today had to happen as we spent a sleepless night last night in the caravan with minus whatever degrees and the gas stopped functioning properly, I’m told it doesn’t freeze but stops doing what it’s meant to so the decision was made to just move in.

our other problem just now is the pellet stove, that’s a fortnight it’s been on and has used half a ton of pellets, the installer having been very good at the beginning suddenly more or less left us to it in terms of how to operate it most economically and didn’t install the controller saying we’d need to get our spark to put it in and we’ve not been able to pin him down as he’s so busy, I’m hoping @Declan52 is going to read this and come back to me with some advice on operating, we had the stove set at 70 degrees which was what the installer left it at but it just kept on burning up more and more pellets very rarely going off, we decided to lower it to 60 but although this saved on pellets the water wasn’t hot enough for a bath. We haven’t been heating the house to a great heat only 16 degrees with the ufh but tonight we had to up it and turn the radiators on upstairs as there seemed to be cold coming down into the ground floor from the mezz, don’t get me wrong I’m warm enough but I’m worrying about the cost of the pellets as we could end up using a ton a month at this rate!

Any advise gratefully received!

Basic observation.

This WAS working (to a degree) and the tank was getting hot.  Now it is not.

have you changed ANYTHING?

Where is the stove in relation to the tank? and more importantly does it flow by thermosyphon or is there a pump?  Is the pump running?

Yes @ProDave that’s right it was working although not quite right but we haven’t changed anything, there is a pump on the boiler and yes it’s working but because we’re hearing a gurgling at times we’ve been bleeding it and getting a bit of air out

There will be a pressure gauge somewhere.  What pressure is it reading?

If you have been bleeding air out, and not putting water back by opening the valves on the fill loop, it may have shut down due to low pressure.

Open the AAV and just leave it open and let it clear itself. Stick the pressure up a little on the circuit too.

Now  looking at it, the right hand load valve just seems to take from the top of the tank until the lower tank is hot and that’s why the load valve is set up as it is.

Any photos of the left side of the tank ..?  And does it have an internal hot water coil ..??

Reading just under two bar @ProDave

yes @PeterW it does have an internal hot water coilimage.thumb.jpg.b62c2ef16eac242f7988768275acf062.jpg

Those bare wires twisted together bottom left don't give me much confidence it has been wired properly.

Don’t worry about the wiring @ProDaveit is being attended to as we speak, installer did not do any of the wiring and resulted in us having to get the spark out at short notice just to get it going, he’s back now to finish off.

thankyou thank you @PeterW hubby went through everything you advised and was up till 3am , air in the tank seems to have been the problem and it’s now working fine ?

Really pleased for you @Christine Walker..!!

I would leave that butterfly valve open to the air vent, top up the pressure to around 2 bar and then ensure the bypass is closed on the boiler return mixer.

I would also get them back to fix that zone valve and get everything labelled up properly

No @Declan52 we haven’t got that far yet! Hopefully my son in law will be over sometime soon and set that up! I’d sent a message to the installer last night before we got help on here and he answered this morning saying give me a ring anytime which I did this morning and got no answer!

Hi everyone, thanks again @PeterW for all your help last night but unfortunately things have gone t*ts up again, I’ve just emailed the installer AGAIN and told him this set up is not fit for purpose, it just can’t seem to heat everything, we either get roasting hot tap water or we get ufh, haven’t even tried the radiators upstairs, house is not warm at all although it seems to heat certain parts of the tank but not it all, really really wish I’d never seen it!

Yup on full chat it will be fine HOWEVER....

If you’re referring to the one that you’ve got next to the thermal store then it feeds both rads and UFH manifold and the manifold will be a higher resistance. You may need to up the flow rate on the manifold to make it draw off that tee as currently if both the rads and manifold want heat, the lowest restriction will be the first rad on the circuit.

We’ve ended up with no heat this weekend! Installer is coming on Monday but that’s little help now when it’s bloody freezing here, I can assure you he won’t be leaving till it’s working properly!

That’s not good, and it’s bloody freezing this weekend for sure. Hope you’ve got some fan heaters just to keep a bit warm. I have a feeling that your installer may struggle to get out alive! ?

When do you need to register the system for the RHI payments?

No fan heaters! You’re flogging a dead horse trying to heat this place with anything electrical with the cathedral ceiling it just doesn’t heat up, we have a 16kw has space heater which can heat up not bad but it’s a gas guzzler and you have to be very careful with it, I’m at the end of my tether once again, to think if we’d just put oil in we’d be sitting here warm with some money still in the bank, don’t know when we apply for the RHI payments , still trying to get the remainder of loan from them and they keep moving the goalposts, adding things on that We supposedly need which we didn’t get told about at the start, quite honestly they haven’t a clue what they’re doing!

I’d be buying a couple of electric throws and using them I think. I’ve got one here and it was a lifesaver when my boiler broke down last year. Fan heaters aren’t great in this room either as it’s too large for a silly heater really.

I think (don’t quote me!) you have 12 months from the commissioning date to apply for the RHI which is the date on the microgeneration certificate. That should be the date that your installer tests and signs off the system but that implies that it’s working so maybe you don’t have yours signed off yet? You also need the EPC too.

What a surprise re the goalposts moving! ?
