lizzie Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 I see lots of photos posted on here of various MVHR systems, they all seem to have some form of silver foil wrapped round the big pipes coming from the unit. I have no silver foil on mine.......please what is its purpose and do I need it. System is due to be commissioned in a couple of weeks so if I need to ask a question of the installer its the time to do it. Thank you!
ProDave Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 Pipes that pass through an un heated part of the house should be insulated. Also the big pipes between the inlet and outlet and the mvhr unit should be insulated even if in a warm space (as they will contain cold air) Some forms of insulation for this have a foil wrap, but not all (mine don't)
lizzie Posted February 28, 2018 Author Posted February 28, 2018 (edited) Thanks @ProDave thought it must be to do with insulation . I seem to have 2 pipes that look like expanding metal and two that look like grey polystyrene........ Edited February 28, 2018 by lizzie typo
NSS Posted February 28, 2018 Posted February 28, 2018 Much like ours @lizzie except that our grey polystyrene inlet and exhaust are also wrapped with armaflex.
lizzie Posted February 28, 2018 Author Posted February 28, 2018 @NSS that armaflex looks a good idea the polystyrene doesnt seem to be very substantial. Did you add that or was it supplied as part of your system?

Did you add that or was it supplied as part of your system? It doesn’t need to be thick - it just needs to keep the steel at a temperature close to the incoming or outgoing air. You may find the duct is actually made of polystyrene - certainly has that look about it. It’s pretty strong as long as you don’t hit it ..! 1
le-cerveau Posted March 1, 2018 Posted March 1, 2018 These are my units from the stage 1 install, the foil like ones are actually silencers going to the manifolds, which have acoustic dampening in also, the black stuff is EPS ducting and leads to the outside world. 1
le-cerveau Posted March 1, 2018 Posted March 1, 2018 On my blog there is a picture of them now fully plumbed in and running, even the one at 275m3/h is fairly quiet, audible in the plant room but nowhere else. 1
