Alwayslearning22 Posted March 19 Posted March 19 What is the proper way to seal this opening through floor? Garden is infested with rats I’m worried they might end up coming through this pipe. thanks
JohnMo Posted March 19 Posted March 19 I would and did, stainless mesh screwed up and stuffed in, and the spray foamed it all together. Next get bait traps with this in there https://amzn.eu/d/0fyW3NPc It's a one time eat and their dead.
Big Jimbo Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Wire wool. that is a water pipe coming up through a sleeve ? keep stuffing it down, untill you cant get any more in. Rats or mice, wont chew through wire wool, because it makes there gums bleed. I'm not saying dont use poison, but it is always a shame that owls etc then eat the dead rats, and are poisoned. Rats need a food and water source. If you have either of them in your garden, such as a bird feeder, or a pond. Try and remove those. Best of luck. Getting rid of rats is much harder than most people think. 2
saveasteading Posted March 20 Posted March 20 1 hour ago, Big Jimbo said: such as a bird feeder I've stopped feeding the birds. A lot of the food is lost to the ground and rodents clear it. Also i read that we are fattening up our resident garden birds in winter, which then dominate the birds we see less.. esp the migrating ones arriving after an exhausting journey. 3
Iceverge Posted March 20 Posted March 20 I've heard of fine sand being used to fill such pipes. Even in highly airtight houses. Would the rats bother digging through?
Big Jimbo Posted March 20 Posted March 20 @Iceverge IMO rats, and mice, love a bit of sand to dig through.
Onoff Posted March 20 Posted March 20 Cheap stainless steel pot scourers scrunched in and foamed. Crushed, broken glass is good. Round here it was de rigueur to lay bottles down if building a shack, smash them all and cast the slab on top. Just to stop the tunnel bunnies gnawing their way through.
Alwayslearning22 Posted March 21 Author Posted March 21 Thanks for the replies lads Is foam safe to use on water pipe?
Onoff Posted March 21 Posted March 21 Similar situation here where my mains water comes up through the footings / slab then into a suspended floor space. I ran the MDPE water pipe in a blue corrugated duct: I then rolled a bit of perforated, galvanized sheet and wrapped the exposed section of duct within the suspended floor space: Like this:
Alwayslearning22 Posted March 30 Author Posted March 30 I forgot to ask. What is the correct way to seal ducting like this on both ends? I saw diagrams online and there supposed to be sealed. will stuffing wire wool down without foam do the job? I read that foam can damage pipe?
