Another update. Since installing Starlink we have an intermittent problem with WiFi calling. We are out in the sticks with no mobile signal and rely on using broadband for phone calls. I have searched t'internet and it seems to be a known problem to do with IP addresses but without a definite solution. Has anyone else here experienced similar problems or even better, found a solution?

Just to eliminate the obvious when you've encountered this issue have you rebooted both the router and your phone/device?

Have you tried changing your DNS service. Can do it either on the devices (WARP) or in the actual router.

So I just changed the phone DNS from automatic to off. The calling and text services now appear to be working. Do you know if there are any security issues with the changes I have made?

Yes I have tried that without any success.

Not sure about security when it is off.

I use CloudFlare as they only keep limited data for 24 hours.

There are a number of free, and paid for, services.

DNS stands for Domain Name Service and is the things that changes website names to IP addresses (simple explanation). There is such a thing as DNS spoofing, which intercepts  call to DNS and provides a "bad" IP address.

So, yes correct DNS setup is crucial to a secure network.

So on my phone I have turned off auto DNS and in doing so my WiFi calling now works but I have removed a level of security. If I do as @SteamyTea has and use a private DNS such as CloudFlare then the security is improved but will my WiFi calling still work? I guess I can try it and see!!

Will take about 5 minutes to set it up with CloudFire, just download the apps and away you go.

We've had it fitted as part of the deal.

Very fast when nearby. Very slow to nil at 30m away in the site caravan.

As the project is all metal clad, we will have to provide boosters.

The fitter asked why starlink when there was an O2 mast within sight. Well, because O2 don't say that reception is any good in the area and because they are right... it's very poor.

I've set up CloudFlare and everything appears to be working as it should. Many thanks for the suggestion.

Your welcome.

Seems i did not waste my time being an IT lecturer.

You may find that your connection is a little slower, but probably not noticeably so.

Does anyone know how much data Starlink collects, stores, analyses and then sells on?

It is only recently that I have started to think more about the data retention by the big boys, even though I have always been sensible about my internet usage.

Have to say that DNS being the cause of this surprised me a bit, despite 'it's always DNS' being a thing that people put on t-shirts. Was expecting it to be more NAT/firewall stuff.

In any case, i expect cloudflare will be faster than almost anything else. Because a huge chunk of webtraffic flow through them anyway, using their DNS can often speed things up vs slow it down.

9.9.9.9 is another service thats worth looking at (Google Quad9)

Both cloudflare and Quad9 offer filtered 'safe' versions (using different addresses) that might be preferable to use if you have kids.

I think @Gone West's kids can sort that.  What kids are for.

I once defaulted my browser (Brave), stopped me looking at just about everything.

Grandkids these days, I wouldn't be suprised if it isn't Great Grandkids in the next year or two.

I've bought an outdoor unit to add to my mesh network, as the signal is weak in the garden. Wendy likes to listen to BBC Sounds stories while gardening.
