We're in the process of building an open Car Port with a cavity wall construction (no insulation), facing bricks inside and out, nothing will be plastered.

Is there a way to secure the wall-plates down but either not have the restraint straps visible or that they are slightly more aesthetically pleasing?

A few options:

  • Have a structural engineer design a heavy traditional cut roof the roof capable of resisting wind loads without straps (Building Regs Approved Doc A says 'vertical strapping may be omitted if the roof: a. has a pitch of 15° or more, and b. is tiled or slated, and c. is of a type known by local experience to be resistant to wind gusts, and d. has main timber members spanning onto the supported wall at not more than 1.2m centres')
  • Cast a suitably heavy reinforced concrete ring beam around the top of the wall and fix the roof to that - again, a Structural Engineer would be required for the design and to prove it is adequate
  • Fix the straps to the cavity face of the inner leaf, subject to the knock-on impact of this on insulation / cavity closure & satisfying your BCO.

Can you not drill down through several layers of bricks and resin bond studs in place and then bolt the wall plates down or something similar - subject to calculating uplift loads.

Put stainless studding down the cavity between the two leaves of brickwork, let it poke up past the top course

drill a hole in the wall plate and drop them over the studding.

you could just drop the restraint strap down the cavity and build it in, but it would be hard to terminate it neat at the wall plate.

you could use a twist strap and go onto the side of a rafter.

it all depends what you want to see or what you don’t.
if it’s  fully open underneath you will want no straps on show.
