YorkieSelfBuild Posted September 18 Posted September 18 Hi, I'm trying to decide on the orientation of plank flooring. I think I'd prefer to avoid transition strips so the landing dictates it goes left to right. The right hand side bedrooms are complicated as they have double aspect windows so sunlight will come from top and right, and the 1st floor room's longest wall is vertical while the 2nd floor room's is horizontal. Currently I have the planks follow the longest wall. What do people think? Any suggestions to improve it? Cheers
Crofter Posted September 19 Posted September 19 It's really just a question of aesthetics, but I don't like the idea of using different plank directions on the same floor of the house.
nod Posted September 19 Posted September 19 Ideally planks should run along the length of the room Even if it means them changing direction from room to room

JohnMo Posted September 19 Posted September 19 Just choose a direction and sticks with it. Left to right for all rooms and halls or up down for all. I prefer them running from windows instead of across the main windows, so my case all would run left to right.

It’s more to do with keeping looking realistic The joists would normally span the shortest part of the room Hence the boards running length ways

But mine are structural so span across the joists, which of course all span the shortest part of the room.

YorkieSelfBuild Posted September 19 Author Posted September 19 I'm leaning towards all left to right now, which was my original idea. It's LVT so I'll loose lay to see if vertical works for that 1st floor bedroom. Thanks for all the replies!

BotusBuild Posted September 20 Posted September 20 On our ground floor we have done as in Nod's picture above. The herringbone in my picture meets LVT tiles in the kitchen area, which orient across the arrows (L to R). There will be a brushed bronze 38mm "rail" where they meet
