Gaz Bancroft Posted yesterday at 08:44 Share Posted yesterday at 08:44 I have now completed my self-build project. I'm just waiting for building control final certificate and then I will be able to obtain my warranty. When can I obtain normal home and contents insurance? The house is build complete and I would like to move in before Christmas but I'm conscious that my self-build insurance wouldn't cover occupation of the property. Do I need the build complete warranty to obtain normal insurance? Do I need to cancel my self-build insurance once I have taken out standard home and contents insurance? Thank you

Thank you Once I got my completion certificate I just called up my insurer , changed to ‘normal’ insurance and of course my annual premium dropped so they refunded that . They never asked for any proof on completion . Also my self build insurance at the time allowed for occupation . Conor Posted yesterday at 09:05 Share Posted yesterday at 09:05 Day you get the completion certificate is the day you should change to a normal home insurance policy. Our self policy was voided upon completion.

Blooda
We changed ours the day we got the completion certificate. We were extending the self build insurance on a monthly basis at the end, as we were trying to get it over the line. We still had our previous house - so officially we [me and wife] moved in new house on that day. Son officially stayed at old house (student so 0% Council tax), until it was sold.
