Soil stacks

Hi All

I have just been thinking about our build regarding our soil stacks.

At the start of the build we decided to put the soil stacks externally without much thought If I’m being honest.

I am not sure I have made the right decision to go external, there is going to 2 stacks both the sides of the house so not in direct view.

Is it better to run them internally or externally?

We are now have a string course around the house and worry this means we will have to set the soil pipe over that too!

Any comments welcome

We have ours internally with an AAV

Mainly for heat loss reasons. If you need to have a vent at the top you're probably better off thermally with them outside.

From an airtightness point of view either is fine so long as you deal with the wall penetration junction properly.

Maintenance, noise, ease of repair and fitting you're probably better off outside.

  • 3 weeks later...

Having spent an entire day unclogging a blocked soil stack that was boxed in, inside my brother-in-laws house, I’d definitely want that sort of thing outside of my house.

We were 10 mins away from ripping out the kitchen cupboards to expose the stack when I managed to get it clear.

only put them external if your going for the 70's council estate look.

They should feed into a chamber as soon as practivable to allow for easy rodding. Vent them to a roof tile vent.

Ours are all internal.

Make sure they have the special large radius bend at to bottom.

The stack furthest from the main sewer should be open vented (according to our BCO) any others can have an AAV
