Digital thermostat for UVC

Recommended Posts

I have an unvented cylinder made by Telford called a Telford Tempest (indirect, heated by gas boiler). It currently has a cheap cylinder thermostat on it. I would like to cover the UVC with a jacket/insulation, but understand from posts here that it is not advisable to have a basic thermostat underneath the insulation as it will cause faulty temperature readings and that instead, before insulating, I should be upgrading the thermostat to a digital one.

Please could:

  1. someone recommend a digital thermostat for such a purpose
  2. advise on whether I need to empty the UVC before switching out the existing thermostat with the new one, and how easy this upgrade is to do - is it something straightforward I could do myself (no plumbing experience and only basic electrics experience) or do I need a plumber/electrician.

Hopefully this is something @Nickfromwales (commiserations about the football btw) or @Mr Punter can answer in their sleep.

You can relax, I'm "sport-immune". 😎

I'm not quite the quintessential 'Taff' I'm afraid :/ Discernibly refined, and, of course, "tits only" on every single first date, without deviation. A true gent, and a connoisseur of life if you like.

Something like this may suffice. Somebody else on here has posted a different unit, but I cannot find it.

"sport-immune" that's a new one. Does that mean you are a fat gitt?

A made-in-China special. Thanks.

Did you see my question about ease of installation and whether i need to empty the cylinder?

As nice as it is to have everything digital these days, a normal cylinder thermostat is digital, it is on or off.

I am not sure if covering it with insulation will be a problem, may have to adjust it a degree or two.

Not the same as covering a cable to a 3 kW heating element, tat can cause problems with overheating and potentially an electrical fire.

Well the tits are still in the football.

If concerned about the thermostat could you just leave a gap for it in the jacket? That said, is it really worth insulating it more than it already is?

keen to insulate it as it's in the same room as our MVHR (there's less than 75cm distance between tank and MVHR unit), so i think it is warming the air coming into the house by a degree or so. Not a problem now, but annoying in summer. Other option is to further insulate the ducts of the MVHR. That might be easier i guess, but I've already bought the jacket and too late to return it.

It's not more the surrounding piperwork (and/or pump, if present) is it? Normally UVCs are so well insulated that they don't tend to emit much heat. Does no harm adding more insulation I suppose though, and of course if you've already got it!

@Adsibob

Have you put a thermometer (probably and IR one) on the cylinder when it is fully charged.  Then you will have an idea how much difference the jacket will make, compared to adding extra to the MVHR.

As you have the jacket, you may as well use is anyway and then worry about the thermostat.  When I say worry, I mean forget about it.

Normally they fit in a pocket, loosen a grub screw and pull it out. If you have to unscrew a threaded connection with seal, at least depressurise the tank!

Any thermostat installed into the tank needs to also include a failsafe trip to meet G3 regs.

To use any other stat such as the ones listed you then need to either leave the existing one in and turn it all the way up (ie 90°C) and just use the external one to control the tank, or you bypass the thermostat contacts and leave the failsafe in place.
