ToughButterCup
Occasionally we employ a local lad to do odd jobs round the site - help clear up, stack palettes and so on. Its been a couple of weeks since he came to work. On seeing the newly built house he asked what the blocks were made of. I explained they were made of wood chips, cementified and then pressed into shape and dried. Then they were stacked and filled with concrete. "So these is wood, is it?" "Yes" " Hmmm, aint never seen a log cabin built like that" Got any similar pearls of wisdom ?
Oz07
Insulating all partitions with acoustic wool. Leave plasterer to board one 600x1200 section we had left open to plank out stairs. Remind him to insulate. Get back later and we still seem to have same amount of batts. Did you insulate-yes you sure-yes Looks like we have same amount of batts- we had a offcut of celotec that nearly fitted perfect so use that! Ferdinand
Think this thread should have positives as well as negatives. I have a huge amount of lessons from my trades. Now to remember some.
Barney12
I've typed a couple of these before but a few of my favourite local phrases uttered by good old fashioned Devon trades folk are: "That looks like a bag of shit tied ugly" "You cain't learn it boy" "That needs a coat of lookin at" or if it's really bad "that's goin to need two coats of lookin at" "My maid is tight as a ducks arse [long pause] and that's watertight" (Refering to his wife's refusal to allow him to spend money before you start thinking dirty! "Maid" is the Devon term for female.)
Triassic
My roofer is an old school traditionalist, when I asked how many slates to order he said the supplier will want to sell you more than you need, dont bother, just order enough to cover the actual area of a random with, deminishing course roof. At the end he had twenty small slates left. The supplier wanted to send my 10% extra for breakages, we had six break.
ProDave
I lost count of how many people told me we had put the frame up "inside out" because with our build method, the OSB racking layer goes on the inside of the frame.
