Windows Above a door?

Hi!

I would like to fit a row of upvc windows above the door as seen in the photo, would this be something i could do, and if so, any pointers as to what i should be looking out for in terms of securing it etc. passing building regs etc.

Thanks :)

No problem doing that assuming it’s not a load bearing wall. No difference to fixing in middle of a stud wall

Thanks for your reply, it's the face of an extension i am planning to build, so will be bearing the weight of sloping roof... does this count as load bearing?

If it’s taking the roof load then things get a little more complicated as you will need a lintel or load bearing header above the windows. BC would/shoul want to see an SE spec and sign off for the detail there.

I've got 670mm space between the top of the door header and the bottom of the walls top plate... Do you think i'd be pushing it with a 500mm tall window? or should i go for a smaller window? i was hoping 500mm window because they seem to be the smallest size that actually open! cheers.

Surely all you would do is move the lintel that is above the door now to being just under the wall plate.  Then the window could fill whatever gap is between the underside of the lintel and the top of the door.

Normally yes I agree but I’m thinking the sketch shows a stud wall and probably OSB sheathed making the frame above the door very rigid (no lintel) take that away and you are/could be loading the top midspan of the door frame.

unless the sketch is indicative and there is supposed to be a lintel/door header.

Having a fan light above the door is no different that the windows already shown to the LHS - just move the timber lintels shown above the door to directly under the wall plate. I’m presuming this is a timber frame and the lintels have all been designed by a timber frame specialist? If you are having an external masonry skin then you should be using a Keystone (OOEAA) L-shaped lintel on the outside.

This is a timber frame, but no timber frame specialist involved, I did the sketch myself. I am on a very low budget and have been and will continue to watch as many youtube videos and read as much as possible to learn. Would you say I really should get specialists involved? I wont be having an external masonry skin, just some sort of cladding.

The sketch does show a stud wall and OSB sheathing, there is also a lintel/door header which is above the door, but details of the lintel i have yet to finalise (was planning on more in depth research before this part).

BC will more than likely ask for frame calculations or details - including lintels. Check with them and ask what they require - if faced with a timber frame on site I certainly would ask for something from a timber frame designer.

Apologies, but I'm going to have to ask why?  The windows are already unbalanced and look odd; if you need more light, I'd be trying to work with the existing to achieve something more aesthetically pleasing.

What slope is the roof? If needing more light I'd be putting skylights in, vertical light is more valuable then horizontal.

We have ~3m celinings in part of our house and 2400mm head heights for all the doors and windows, looks just right. You need some symmetry and constancy.

Thanks, i'll ask them :) hopefully spending some time documenting my calculations in a clear enough way will do... I can only imagine how much the professionals would charge for the design 😅 which of course is fair enough... if I had the spare money 🤣

Thank you, It's all good I really appreciate the input! Here's a better idea of the design with the windows above the door. I want a shelf  extended from the window sill with houseplants on it, the area to the LHS of the room with the arched window extends out from where our kitchen currently is (a whole 2m wide), and will continue as a kitchen (2m wide) and the remainder of the room extends out from where our current living room is. so i guess the thinking with the windows is to accentuate the different areas by having 2 distinct styles. Maybe I am getting a little trigger happy with the designing though...

I havent quite worked this bit out just yet but will do very soon. Sky lights would be awesome though!!!! I have attached a new photo of the kind of idea I had with the windows right up to the ceiling...

Here's also a sketch on paper of the left hand side of the room being a kitchen area and then the rest being general hang out quaters...
