Seen an Ecodan for sale (PUHZ-W85VHA2), being sold as spares/repairs as it needs regasing every couple of months. Anyone any idea what might cause that and how quick/costly a fix it would require?

Say you will take it off their hands, then find a refrigeration engineer to find the leak.

Leaky heat pumps, like leaky gas boilers need to be isolated until the problem is fixed. Defeats the main point of them otherwise.

heat pump no different from car aircon, how many cars have you had or been in where the aircon doesn't work, normally a easy fix, failed seal, something come loose.

Most likely it’s got a damaged heat exchanger coil on the back - minor corrosion on the fins and they leak slowly from that. Sadly it’s junk unless you can find a refrigeration engineer who is interested as it’s a full strip and rebuild and the coils are about £600 + VAT or so from memory and then you’ve got 4-5 hours labour plus the re-gas and anything else that it needs.

big difference between cars and ASHPs, @JohnMo. Car systems are designed to dismantled for maintenance/ repair/ accident damage/ ease of assembly.

ASHPS are hermetically sealed, fully brazed, like a domestic fridge.

Yeah, it’s scrap. Unless you’ve got f-gas, some leak spray and a brazing torch…. To be honest if it’s sub £100 it could be a good donor for parts to make up something custom.
