House Facade - helppppp!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

We are feeling at a lost cause and would

really appreciate some advice..

After receiving our planning permission we were delighted with the house shape (we are between two bungalows, so felt this is a great achievement).

However upon approval we commenced discussions with the architects about the facade, concerns that it may age quickly and if we had selected the correct materials.
The architects suggested a redesign, which we received today and this delivered something very similar, just in a different layout.

And I still don’t love it.... ?

I’m now thinking what next - I don’t love this design of materials and this feels like more of the same, with a different format.

What is the best approach to selecting the house facade? Any recommendations of someone who could assist us with this please? I have created a mood board of materials I like, but I’m unsure how to execute this and make sure it works...

Many thanks

Wow, quite a big question!  Congrats on getting planning through; that's a big hurdle sorted.  I suspect your architects didn't want to change anything drastically to avoid a fresh planning application.  Rather than look at individual materials, perhaps find some images of styles of house that appeal, and then consider how that would fit with your location?

I think their choice suits the house design but can understand its not everyone's taste. I once visited an architect designed house that was ultra modern on the outside with large metal windows and modern cladding.... but judging by the interior the owner really wanted a country cottage. It had oak cottage doors and flowery tiles.

Can you post some examples from your mood board?

Thank you for your advice - it’s really appreciated.. I just think it looks very busy and really doesn’t fit with the mood boards I sent either.. here are some moodboard pictures I shared :) I feel that my mood boards are much softer.... but I’m struggle to articulate what it is that we want ?

I don't think the design is a million miles out from your moodboard - the windows/metal cladding looks quite dark but this is probably more to do with the lighting on the render. The biggest difference is the stone/bricks - your mood board uses something similar to this product which I have been looking at ...

My view on selecting external materials is to find something I like and copy! Either that or find a design consultant who can help - but for your average self builder it's probably quite hard to find someone who specialises in this (and who doesn't charge a fortune).

+1 To be fair to the architect, I think the design is very close to your precedent images. It’s just a matter of selecting slightly different materials and textures for the cladding. Also the windows could be changed to something a bit less fussy. The whole facade can be softened with less contrasting colours and textures to make it more subtle, which may not date so quickly. It’s not easy to articulate exactly what you want without asking the architect to produce numerous drawings. Best way is play about with images yourself with a sketching tool, I found PowerPoint quite useful!

  • 4 months later...

A lot of the stone in the pictures isn’t coursed.

Our storm mason appeared with a lot of reclaimed uncoursed stone with a rock face and an uneasy stand off set in as I absolutely insisted it was flat faced and coursed. Ultimately I won. I’m glad as I find uncoursed stone looks far too busy but if it’s laid in courses and is tidy it just works so much better.

try looking at it with coursed stone and use a softer render (we have parex natural lime) and oak (as it’s oak framed) at it feels very natural and has settled into its surroundings
