Stairs, building regs.

Recommended Posts

I’m leaning towards getting a standard cheap flight of stairs and building the winders myself.

Im just starting to read up on regs for stairs, I know the standard 100mm openings and straight forward stuff, has anybody got any knowledge any any regs that could catch me out.

And any pointers for good design, these are stairs leading up to a mezzanine area that is my wife’s craft room so probably see only infrequent use.

Cheers.

Whenever i looked at "off the shelf" stairs, I found they only came in certain "floor to floor" heights. and none matched what I have.

Instead I got mine from stairbox.com, made to measure and not very expensive.  There are others like TK stairs and pear stairs also worth looking at, with on line design tools that give you an instant price.

+1 for stairbox, good website to design your own stairs. It allowed me to build my own half landing and order two short stairs to link up, they also let me order spare oak fir the landing to match the stairs.

The key thing is to try and make the going and rising the same for all steps otherwise it becomes a trip hazard. This requires careful planning if you are adding steps to an existing staircase.
