Ferdinand
I seem to have developed a measure of tinnitus as (probbaly) a side effect of last winter's lurgy. Unfortunately that means that in addition to struggling to hear the microwave hum and warming drawer click, I am now running TVs and Alexa at nearly maximum volume, with a couple of surprisingly good <£40 bluetooth speakers for when I am outside. When this has all calmed back down I'll talk to a doc about it, but I am also going to need to tweak the sound system, Currently Alexa is an Amazon Echo G3. Can anyone advise on the best upgrade path? I think I want a second base (I think they can pair), or something that will give me a bit more amplitude with little loss of quality, I guess there are perhaps 3 rooms plus outside where it would be nice to have sound at this stage. I am not an audio geek, and all suggestions are welcome. I won't be buying SONOS, due to their previous loyal customer shafting activities. SteamyTea
If you genuinely have tinnitus, you need to be turning the volume down, not up.

The sound is a background woosh-woosh-woosh in one ear (like listening to a seashell !), which I first thought to be the central heating system doing something strange. Hopefully it will clear up. Does it match you heartbeat. My tinnitus is a high pitch squeal, sometimes quiet, sometimes loud. Loud at the moment as I am thinking about it. Some people get quite distressed about it, but having had it since my mid 20s, I just accept it. Does make very quiet nights a bit interesting. Usually just put the radio on. Hopefully it's not pulsatile tinnitus but this gives a description. That's the problem with the internet, too much information. https://www.tinnitus.org.uk/pulsatile-tinnitus

Cpd
Off subject..... I was once driving down the motorway and got the smell of burning rubber coming through the vents and then in front of me was a car running at about 40 mph with a totally flat tire that was disintegrating as I looked at it..... it was all quite dangerous so I drew along side and saw an old lady driving and completely oblivious to the problem...... I then pulled half in front of her and forced her onto the hard shoulder and to a standstill. She was quite relaxed about being forced of the road by a total stranger in a beat up landrover and when I explained what the problem was she looked mildly surprised but said the noice had been getting very bad and she had had to turn the radio up to near full volume just to hear her favourite show........ I changed the wheel and sent her on her way...... I also have Bad tinnitus That developed when I first got Chronic fatigue syndrome the specialist ran various tests on site and sent me on my way saying that there was nothing he could do and I should get used to it.... needless to say i have I indeed got used to it and though I am aware of it often I don’t give it much thought anymore. Sorry can’t help with the speeders........

May be a sign that your diabetes is all over the place, or an embolism. Had a regular customer in tonight, got chatting and found out she has tinnitus quite badly. I wonder how common it is? And how many people never bother to get it checked out.
Ferdinand
According to the British Tinnitus Association, about 1 in 7 have tinnitus effects to some degree. The diabetes is currently under decent control (A1c just over 7), but next year is my 20th anniversary of diagnosis so it could just be a matter of time thing, as T is sometimes coincident of D. I also take statins, and T is a (rare) side-effect. Though all my blood counts going out of kilter over the last 18 months following a very nasty chest infection, of which one known issue is A1c tests getting pushed out of whack. At one stage saw a ridiculous fall in just a fortnight that we all thought was impossible. We got to a diagnosis of a form of Leukemia (Hairy Cell) in April / May, and I have been treated since with a monoclonal antibody, and it seems to be going into rapid and hopefully long term remission (the condition is well known with a well established treatment). That is currently front and centre for obvious reasons, but I'll talk to the relevant specialists on the Tinnitus. Cheers for the comments F Edited August 12, 2020 by Ferdinand
SteamyTea
I thought that my hayfever was bad this year, had to take 3 days off work (though I could have gone in after a day off), first days I have had off in over 25 years. Makes me a pussy compared to what you have.

But if one has Leukemia, Hair6 Cell is the one to have apparently as the vast majority go into long term remission and there is little effect on lifetime length. One of my sister's ex husbands has leukaemia, along with one of his brothers. He seems to have it all under control now and I don't think it is affecting his life anymore. Onoff
Any balance issues along with this possible tinnitus? I only ask as SWMBO has Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. Affects her balance and hearing. The local GP is pretty useless tbh but it seems trying the "home Epley Manoeuvre" might help. She's been on at me for months to help her try this. Something to do with crystals in the ear canal shifting. https://www.tinnitus.org.uk/balance-and-tinnitus

redtop
anyhow, to answer the question ? I have just got a new echo show 8 and whilst not 'party' loud it would be enough to annoy other people in the house at full volume. Amazon are also doing a new speaker the echo studio which whilst expensive would be plenty loud enough. I also have a sonos but will probably get rid and stick to amazon now they have the studio out; very impressed with the echo tbh. oh, I got the echo show cheap as a bunde deal when I bought a new cctv camera D
