vivienz Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 It turns out that I don't have enough data points in what will be my home office/room for doing stuff. I need a minimum of two - one for my old PC that needs a hard wired connection, and one for my voip phone connection. I need to have the two together as I still need to send faxes on occasion (our rubbish bank insists on them for certain transaction requests) and use a modem on the PC. I've looked at D Link and Netgear ethernet switches - does anyone have any experiences or particular recommendations?
MrMagic Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 For most home users they are all much of a muchness. If I had to choose a basic brand for home use I'd go with either Netgear or TP-Link. Reasonably affordable, Plug and play, Simples. One thing that concerns me in the above - I'm assuming you are sending faxes and using the PC modem via the VoIP connection? or over a traditional phone line? I've had lots of problems with fax-over-voip in the past - have you tested this configuration? 1
PeterW Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 Check the VoIP phone doesn’t have an in and an out port - some do and act as a switch on their own. If not, the cheapest TP-Link one from eBuyer will do you fine. VoIP can live on a 10/100 switch, no need for Gb Ethernet 1
Temp Posted September 2, 2019 Posted September 2, 2019 I'm afraid I've not found TP-Link kit reliable long term but perhaps its just me. Netgear has been ok as has DrayTek. 1

Temp Posted September 3, 2019 Posted September 3, 2019 (edited) Amazon seem to have a good price on the Netgear 5 port switches.... £14 inc prime delivery. Not used this on myself but I have an 8 port which isn't much more. https://www.amazon.co.uk/NETGEAR-Ethernet-Unmanaged-Internet-Splitter/dp/B07PYSNSDD/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?keywords=netgear+switch&qid=1567497572&s=gateway&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFRUlFGRlZZMkxGRkcmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTAxMzg1OTIyS1g0R0xLQjlVQUlNJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTAxNDU0MDk2SlNDRzJMSkc4VEomd2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zcF9hdGYmYWN0aW9uPWNsaWNrUmVkaXJlY3QmZG9Ob3RMb2dDbGljaz10cnVl Edited September 3, 2019 by Temp
MrMagic Posted September 3, 2019 Posted September 3, 2019 Agreed it can be hit and miss with TP-Link - i'm happy with their switches and powerline adapters, not had much success with their routers and wireless kit. FWIW - I'm currently using (& happy with) - Switches - Juniper, Netgear, TP-Link Wireless - Ubiquity Routers (standalone/SOHO) - Draytek Router/Wireless Combo (for most homes) - Netgear, Draytek
