You can get close celled foam strip to pack in gaps and the silicone goes on top. Saves it slumping and cuts down on the quantity needed. Used extensively in commercial curtain walling etc. Wedge in nice and tight then pump your stuff over the top:

But as @Gav_P has worked out - there are plenty of other uses for such a technique !
