There's a longer backgound story to this to do with embodied carbon - but keeping it simple.... We are contemplating alternative roofing materials for our new build and need to know if/what the impact on the design of the construction of footings and structure will be if we have to use tiles over our choice of seamed metal. The metal roof covering weighs about 2 tons the tiled roof more like 22 tons. We are planning to use a timberframe construction too. Do we need beefier footings = more concrete and beefier timberframe = more timber? At this stage we'd prefer not to pay a structural engineer to actually work it all out as the design is still a bit fluid and hope we can get an idea from yourgoodselves! Comments gratefully received. thank you

Hello everyone, I have planning permission for an outbuilding. 8.5 x 3 m I have had ridiculous quotes for over 30k! So thought I could do it cheaper than that. I plan to build single skin block work and clad in wood (eventually, planners made me do it). My planning expires this November so there is a sense of urgency to get it out the ground. Can you please advise me on footings? How deep (on clay ground) should I dig my footings? I thought 1m but when we built our big extension it ended up 2m deep but that was for a cavity wall build. I am also wondering how much cement to pour (in depth), should it be 450mm or more? Then what blocks do I use for the first few courses? I think they should be more engineering blocks or something like that. Its not a big building it is only single skin, I don't want to end up putting all my money in the ground. Advice appreciated. I have the digger booked so I need to give him instructions on what to dig. All help very much appreciated, thank you.

Hi all, Can anyone provide some advice on setting out angles for footings? I have an unusual design with some angles, with some long runs of 10m, which is causing me lots of issues. As you can imagine if I am a degree of so off with these angles I end up being > 100mm off at the other end of the 10m run. I've just not been able to get the angles and correct lengths to match up. I have been using the 3,4,5 method for checking 90 degrees, but I'm still having issues with the other angles. Do you have any advice? Maybe I can use a laser level for this, but I've not been able to find a laser level which measures angles? Any and all advice is appreciated as I've spend 2 days on this already and am stuck! Thanks! Ben

Hi everyone, My wife and I have purchased an 1840's former quarryman's cottage in North Wales and have just embarked on an extension to the rear and side of it. Over the weekend we excavated over 225t and now have a huge clay pit. Still need to dig footings and also sort a terraced retaining wall. The saying 'bitten off more that I can chew' comes to mind Day 1 we struck a problem with an old culvert underneath the floor level so we will have to divert it. It seems pretty daunting given the closest thing I've done like this before is converting an old outside laundry to a new bathroom plus - I don't have a builder as have decided instead to manage it and organise the trades. Would love a builder but as budget is tight (4 kids to feed) I've decided to try and engage the trades myself and order materials so this adds to the 'what the hell am I doing?' I'm thinking of tracking it in a blog or on FB so can post pics there and link to it (if allowed). Anyway, stumbled across this forum while doing some searches and glad I found it. I reckon I'll be using it a bit so hopefully my questions aren't to daft! Cheers Connick

Hello Everyone, I am progressing with some quotes for the foundations for my Potton home. I must admit, the prices have me a little daunted as they seem to be a lot MORE than I was told about 6 months ago. I am not suggesting I am getting "shafted" but I want to run it past you guys to see what you think. I am building a Potton Timber Frame and have been advised that Block and Beam would be the way to go ....easier and more friendly on the surroundings (i.e better received by planners) The house area from looking at the architects footprint and adding on roughly 50cm around (I just did this to be on the safe side for my working out ...I am not sure if it actually done) ..I am coming up with an area of 121.81 Sq Metres with a Perimeter of 49.82 Sq Metres. Now I have the first quote and it is over £23k, I know this company is trusted and has done many foundations for timber frames...But does this seem expensive? I have snipped the basics from the quote below ..so you can see what it entails ...hopefully someone on here will know what some of the specifics mean thanks
