  1. Funny bunch earth dwellers. I like living here
  2. Oh and bacon rolls, biscuits, pizzas, drinks, etc etc etc all at your disposal - I can't build but I can cook
  3. Certainly not knocking the DIY SOS - I love what they do. I used to love Nick Knowles but I think fame has gone to his head, ? AND I know that most of the workers don't get any recognition and don't even want it. It's just that, to me, at this moment, this is even better
  4. I am just utterly gobsmacked (for want of a better phrase) for all you are doing for me. The reaction was purely to that message. @Ferdinand's "Master of all Trades" is starting tomorrow to get my existing house ready for marketing. @PeterW & crew and @Nickfromwales and crew are sorting out my internal works - to what extent I am not yet sure as there seems to be more and more. Never has a disaster (for me) been turned into a positive experience in my life before. DIY SOS has nothing on this. There is no free advertising, no tv fame, and (thank god) no Nick Knowles. These are just people who I have got to know on buildhub over a brief period of time who have surpassed any expectations of the help I hoped for when I joined this forum. I am forever in the debt of all you. And to those who have reached out on an emotional level. Initially, practical help was the last thing on my mind. I was utterly, devastated, sick to the stomach, scared and in full panic mode. Family and friends didn't really understand and were, in general, sympathetic in a condescending way, leading to me feeling even more stupid and pathetic. Only on here were there people who know what it is like to be in this situation - or similar. I'm not sure where I'd be if it wasn't for this forum but I wouldn't be where I am now. Aware that I won't have quite the house I was planning or anything like the pension pot I was counting on. BUT I will have a house that meets my needs and I won't be bankrupt. Thank you Buildhub - You are all amazing
  5. Nick, you are one amazing man
  6. unfortunately they are across the road - I'd go and offer a kettle of hot water but I just get whinged at all the time.
  7. )(*^)*&^)&^ neighbours. The electricity guys have gone through a cable and cut the neighbours off. 10.30 this morning and still not restored. My neighbour is blaming me FFS. I'm not cut off because my supply comes from the other side. Do you think I should treat them to my music at full blast lol
  8. Wonderful as in they come out with ideas that cause other to think I 'wonder' how they think that will work? I 'wonder' how they thing we are going to achieve that? Sometime culminating in I 'wonder' why I paid for that crap? Not knocking all of them .... but ... going on my own experience!!!
  9. I'm on the other side - I dyed it for about 10 years - getting used to blond now - was a redhead and I quite like the shade it's gone now I've got used to it.
  10. Me too, the normal shower is better for rinsing our hair dye to as you can hold it closer and don't get the dye splashing everywhere so much,
  11. Well I hope the quality is good The company 'Just Fascias Ltd in Barnsley have done a fantastic job. Took them a day and half, with their own scaffold towers. I have just discovered that the quoted price £1050 included VAT so the actual cost is about £850 fitted. Has a 10 year guarantee. They use Freefoam So way under half the price that BB wanted to charge Wrong - the quote said VAT included but the order form (that I signed) zero rated it. The office person had just typed her standard quote - which is usually VAT included. I do now remember he was one of the few that knew about the zero rating when he came. so it makes sense. I half thought as much.
  12. I'm on chrome
  13. I'm on a laptop and mine are in colour. Also the ones I have used recently are saved at the top. So any of the old ones I like to use are now at the top, plus a few of the newer ones. It does take a while to load though ??️?️
  14. I love the rainfall shower - and only last week had the same 'discussion' with my sister who prefers the wall mounted, adjustable one.
  15. https://www.ofgem.gov.uk/ofgem-publications/87259/guideelectricitydistributionconnectionspolicy.pdf I found this when I was in a similar situation. It explains but doesn't really help. I had to pay 13.5k for about 50 metres. Firstly it was going to be 8.5k and then the council said that for access reasons to a doctor;s surgery on the road the work could only be done on a Sunday. No choice - no negotiation. Tried to get other quotes for the contestable works and couldn't even get a quote no one was interested. I don't think the document says that it is only within 5 years that they would have to pay you back some of the money but that is no comfort to you as things stand.
  16. Basically what my son said And you can easily get architects who are pretty boring and ATs who have vision but not the focus, commitment or maybe even finances to do the full training. My son didn't do mine because 1 the potential for falling out was too great 2 He lives in Barnsley and was working in Manchester. out at 6 - back at 7 3 (the worst reason) I thought I needed an architect and thought I had one but she was an AT too - and one with neither vision nor practical ideas. She didn't tell me that the slope would cause big issues. She did say my budget of 100k was reasonable. ( Now coming in at 150k) She didn't plan the essential gravity feed to sewer connection that the water board insist on but planned to pump straight into the chamber. Her design required sky hooks, She told me I could not have an understairs loo rather than working out how it could be achieved. or explaining why it couldn't If she thought something I had requested was not possible, rather than discussing how it could be achieved (or why it couldn't) she just ignored it. Her plans stated an escape route was necessary for a ground floor bedroom but not for a first floor one. When we got planning permission and I told her my builder was ready to start she then told me she was away for 2 weeks so everything would have to be delayed until she came back. She didn't tell me that there were other issues to be sorted before building could be started and that building was likely to be delayed by another 2 months at least
  17. To me it sounds like one of Maureen Lipman's 'Ologies' from the 80's
  18. I thought the words had similar meanings. However I've never heard my son refer to himself as a technologist so was happy to accept they may be different, or maybe have a different qualification
  19. My son is an architects technician - his view(obviously biased) is that architects dream up wonderful schemes and it is the technician that has to make it work. Having said that I only found out at the end that my architect wasn't a full architect but a technician and she was rubbish.
  20. The 'neighbour' is currently me. There is an inspection chamber on my current bungalow land that takes mine and my neighbours drain. Where he is planning on cutting into it it is already on the new house land and the existing chamber is also now on the new property. The water board seem to prefer joining pipes rather than going direct into the chamber. I thought I may send them the 2 options and let them decide which they prefer.
  21. I love my varifocals. They did take a bit of getting used to but the only time they are an issue now is if the ground is very uneven and I need to watch my feet in detail Thinking about it that hasn't been a problem for a while either. I buy mine when I go to Turkey on holiday. Free exam including opthamologist exam and the £150 for photochromic, varifocals. And a free professional polish every time I go back. AND he remembers my name and asks after my daughter, who was with me the first time I went.
  22. I might change a letter - but leave the rest of the spelling the same to get past the profanity barrier. I spent 2 hours this afternoon trying to clean the garage a bit. This sink had half an inch of smelly, sludge in the bottom - *baull. The fridge down there had been turned off but kept closed and they were storing food in there (Mice in the garage) *baulk. Etc Etc Etc
  23. billy the builder This is his plan
