  1. Building inspection today and he was very happy with work so far!not a single issue... hooray! ..... Roof now completely gone and one cheek in.
  2. No hypotenuse. Cut end of rafters? You tell me please ? This week I will be filling in the cheeks with vertical studs and the window elevation and making good the old roof (either side of the cheeks) with new felt and battons.... ready for working on the roof this weekend.... Please carry on advising when you have time, much appreciated
  3. Yes they will be cut off but ran out of daylight. Roofing square, yes. Technical drawing experience, no. This is the first project that is truly beyond me so it is husband who drives this one.
  4. Upper end supported on brick wall with wall plate ontop (into attic) Did a bird mouth notch. See your point on rotating top timbers 90 degree, Haven't glued anything until BC have been to look NB... We bought the house with planning already granted so we're going with what we have, there are no sectional drawings of any great detail
  5. Top front horizontal in the photo is 2x4 but another one to go on top..... So will be 4x4. On the cheek rafters is a temporary brace.... is that what you mean? The front elevation is 2.2 with a 920 aluminium window and all that front sits on the steel you can see in the other photo. The corner posts are made of 2x4 and another at right angle Feel free to put me right! Top front horizontal to on the weekends progress. I'm getting building control intomorrow for his opinion before we go any further.... If anyone spots anything wrong
  6. A quick update photo on the weekends progress. I'm getting building control intomorrow for his opinion before we go any further.... If anyone spots anything wrong or missing then feel free to comment....
  7. I happen to have lying around some 50 x 250....is this too much.... I could cut it down.....Thank you and Good morning!
  8. What size timber should the header be? It's 2.4 wide.
  9. Outside spar? Can you expand please?
  10. First day completed without too much drama! Only managed to strip roof tiles s off, cut, fit and bolt extra rafters x2 then cover in tarp cos it's gonna pee down tomorrow.... Grrrr Thank you boys for all your help and advice, it really is appreciated.... X PS. I'm trying really hard not to bother with all too much ? Dee
  11. Yes it is a extractor flue but I can redirect it
  12. First issue uncovered.... See image The new rafters will sit on the right of the existing but there is a joist in the way.... However the joist sits on a steel so will it be ok?
  13. Thank you ? I have to overlap the new rafters that sit alongside the old as it's 6m, how much overlap would you suggest?
  14. Apologies but I get fed up with some blokes (trades) dismissing my efforts ? I Have built truss roof before on my garage, felted, battoned and tiled... Also same on a hip but had builders do the timber work so I have an overview. Anyhoo I very just read through your link and it's brilliant! Answers most questions but I would still very much appreciate you being a sanity check for me when I get to the roof... Next weekend probably.... Thank you!
  15. Simply simon.... Absolutely not! Haven't got a scoobies about cut roofs but if you have please talk me through the process. Step by painful step.... I'm deadly serious,!
  16. Part vaulted? Er, if by that you mean there will be rafter ties up in the apex rather than at ceiling height.... The former is my preference but do I have the option? Part stripped the the tiles off tonight so we're committed,!!!!!
  17. Can't delete the above name! Anyhoo @NickfromWales ....What's an avatar? No I haven't as I thought that was fairly obvious? Yes, I really am building a dormer window.... (With my husband, too complicated on my own!) He's the brains of the family and I've taken 2 week's AL to tackle this
  18. @RichS Yes we are doing a cut roof ( I've tried loading an image of the plans) What do you suggest I do for the ridge... I'm panicking already!
  19. I'm not sure of the difference between the two. The timber in question is at the apex of a new Hip dormer that I'm building, where the trusses come off. It will be about 2.5 long. I've had delivered 50x250 but I could cut it down on the 250 dimension. Do you think weight will be an issue if I use it as is?
  20. What size should the ridge timber be? I have 50 x 250mm
  21. Oh Lord, haven't got that far yet.... Still got to figure how to build the damn thing.... Never done a hip roof before ?
