  1. @Steptoe. Don't put yourself out on my account.... I'm sure you've better things to do ?
  2. @RichS.... Leaded the valleys,?? Can you expand please
  3. Managed to find 11 tiles from 3a roofers in Copdock (thanks Nik) so I'll consider your suggestion @bassanclan @Steptoe. The photo is very accurate, tge tile started life terracotta /red and now all the colour has gone its just grey beige... Where are you located? Hope to start tiling this weekend so I'll have a better idea.
  4. I have considered the above suggestions. The dormer is very prominent and only reclaimed will do... A lot of blood sweat and tears have gone into this little project and to spoil it by any other means would look awful. I have one lead but he's being vague... Thanks for the response
  5. I'm their biggest stalker! Chris has stopped responding... Ha ha
  6. Do I put lead flashing under the tiles of the main roof and over the ridge of the dormer? (where they intersect) I'm using concrete plain tiles?
  7. Cannot find reclaimed concrete plain tile and a half for love nor money.... Exhausted all avenues..... Are there any work around or alternatives DESPERATE!!!
  8. Felting between existing roof and new dormer.... How the hell do I do a neat flat finish where the dormer ridge meets the roof and valleys? ! I've had to strip back Alot of tiles to expose the old bituminous felt (it's very very fragile) while trying to slide the new membrane under it above the dormer ridge. I've laaid a strip along each valley So far I've made a complete fist of it! Thers too much bagging.. Aaargghhh
  9. @ProDave @Triassic I'll be using valley tiles, is the GRP an alternative to these, like a hidden gutter? Do I just hang the tiles with nothing more than felt and battons underneath.... That sounds too easy,!
  10. Thanks @ProDave. And @Triassic I have tiled a hip roof before and a simple gabled roof but with this task I don't know about the valleys, does anything go underneath the valley tiles like a run of membrane or lead for example. Also what happens where the tiles meet the bottom of the cheeks (to be clad in hardie linea) so I use those tile size lead things..... Night night
  11. Now the real fun starts with roofing...A challenge indeed Do you know anything about Roofing @PeterW?
  12. FYI.... Building inspector approved the dormer today... Not one single issue.. One step closer
  13. Oops! Missed this post please don't think I was ignoring you! Drive turned out really well, don't know why I stressed about lime and gravel so much. Weeds are present but apparently it's from above not below. It was a cheap but effective makeover! Thanks for your interest ?
  14. Hope to be tiling the roof next weekend but a few questions first.... I'll be Reusing the concrete plain tiles with tiled valleys and bonnet hips (when I can find them). Both roofs are 45 degrees. Do I put anything where the cheeks meet the original roof? What sort of valley tile do I buy (Angle)? I'll be cladding in hardi linea, so again what happens at the cheeks /old roof junction.... Does the cladding just sit on top of the tiles? Do I leave a ventilation gap.... how much? Apart from the roofing membrane does anything else sit on the valley boards?
  15. Brief update...the bones of the roof up in a day.. And not one duff cut! It was fun putting the tarps over in gusty wind and rain ? Any obvious mistakes?
  16. Discovered a chuffing big steel running exactly under where the front elevation sits so what you see in this picture all the weight will bare on the steel....?

  18. The top timbers will be doubled up but I've run out and awaiting delivery of more on Thursday so will be 100x100... BI was happy with that. Also he suggested a lintel but I'm with you on that one so I've gone with two 50x175 on edge to keep him happy ? wWe bought the house with planning already in place by the previous owner. We modified the plans somewhat but as we have yet to have the project signed off I'm going with whatever the BI suggests! Excellent idea on the strap hanger... Picture please if you have one?
  19. Today's progress, cheeks up, lintel in and the start of the front elevation.... Noggins to go in but I'm waiting for scraps. Tricky getting it square and plumb but managed it!
  20. I'll get to the front elevation this week but I'm unsure how to deal with the window surround. I have an aluminium window 1000mm wide, I know how to create the carcass opening but how do I 'dress' the opening when the window is in... I can't visualise it... I'll be using hardi lines weather board to clad the outside... Sorry for so many questions!
  21. Quick update with photos..... The old rafters are yet to be cut flush with the wall plate as per BRegs chaps suggestion.
  22. I'll get to the front elevation this week but I'm unsure how t deal with the window surround. I have an aluminium window 920mm wide, I know how to create the carcass opening but how do I 'dress' the opening when the window is in... I can't visualise it... 23. Yes, using 6x2 for the ceiling joists There is a blue brick wall that separates a bedroom from the room that is being created by adding the dormer, The rafters that have been cut at head height, rest on the purlin in the attic above.... I cut them at the bird mouth notch that sat on the wall plate. . . . . . . . ( bedroom wall) Does that make sense or am I confusing everything? I'll post a picture tomorrow
  24. Reusing concrete plain tiles. Building a hip roof dormer and thinking ahead about tiling. Having great difficulty finding reclaimed bonnet, valley and tile and a half.... Any alternatives? What about laced valleys? When I make good the main roof upto the dormer cheeks do I carry the felt up the cheeks walls .?
  25. @Simplysimon. We've done everything you did upto bridle joist? Could you expand on that please ? BI suggested cutting existing rafters off at top, vertically at bird mouth notch so they sit flush with front of wall plate, then some fixing for peace of mind. @ProDave. I'll post pictures tomorrow... Got too tired wrestling with huge tarps that have a mind of their own!
