I have a 20 foot container I'm thinking of converting to a garden office and gym. The container would be insulated internally and clad on the exterior with Larch, with a mono pitch wriggly tin roof. With the price of energy I was looking at heating options, I was wondering if anyone has experience of solar hot water systems, or solar panels for heating. Links to working DIY schemes would help ( I like pictures rather than dense text). Or has anyone spotted any other novel ideas for providing heat into a small space?

I’m assuming the board extends into the bottom of the cavity, below the DPC and any moisture discharges there and exits via weep holes. I had hoped someone on he had used this or similar products and could cast some light in them.

I’m getting round to the finished touches and I’m having some stone work carried out. The stone mason mentioned stone backer boards ( plastid type) has anyone used these and who makes them ( links). Recommendations please.

Waiting Times to be Work Done
Triassic replied to Triassic's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Luckily the driveway is existing and the limestone base is solid, in a few areas the bedrock sticks out! I’ve also found a tarmac company working in the village at the moment and asking around neighbours the owner is well regarded locally. I’ve asked him to quote, but he did warn me it could be between six and eight months before he could do the work. -
The other thing she said is that they won’t insulate the plasterboard walls in a room in the roof.

Panasonic ASHP controller location
Triassic replied to Triassic's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
I thought that might be the case. I’ll look at moving it, as part of the plan to improve the current installation, which I have a feeling was done for speed of installation rather than efficiency. -
I have a Panasonic ASHP and the controller is located in the plant room, where it’s warmer than the rest of the house. Is there a recommended location for the controller? In a habitual room for example? Does the controller measure the indoor temperature and will it being in a plant room affect its control efficiency ?

She had no problem, about six months ago, getting surveyors out to measure, no doubt there was a bung for that! Then the various companies say they’ve not got any money left.

I have a disabled friend who is on benefits and her home is not insulated. Is anyone aware of any grants available?

MVHR Vent Calculations Spreadsheet
Triassic replied to Triassic's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
Interestingly our BC wasn’t interested in our results either. It was a tick box exercise. Thankfully he didn’t look at the results too closely as they didn’t add up. I only spotted the error after the event. -
Waiting Times to be Work Done

I would, if I could get someone to visit site to price for the job!! -
Is there air in the system. Air can course air locks, which stop the flow in some cases. You opening the valve wide suggest trapped air.

I'm currently getting quotes for a Tarmac driveway, approximately 100m long. A local company just informed me they can quote but their current waiting list for work to be done is over 12 months ! I thought money was tight and getting such work done would be easy. Is this normal?

We have a 120m long gravel access track, which keeps being badly affected by sudden heavy rain falls, washing the gravel down the slope. We live in an Area Of Outstanding Natural Beauty (ANOB) and the track is in an area covered by a Limestone Pavement Order. We’ve been advised that the best long term option is to tarmac the track. Question is - do you think we will need planning permission?

I've got to start the landscaping soon and need to compact the areas of the patio and various paths and driveway. I'll need a wacker to consolidate the rubble / hardcore layers. Are all wackers equal or should I be looking at a particular weight/make ?

I asked for a list of outstanding items. He sent me a list. I did them and asked for the sign off certificate. He then found six more things , it turned out he had a checklist he was working through. As we were close to the deadline he had to give me six month extension. We got our certificate yesterday.

How to get an extra 2 SAP Points?
Triassic replied to Andeh's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
Interestingly, my Heating system is described as Average in the SAP summary. I asked why, apparently Its driven by the cost of electricity and will only get worse when they issue the next version of SAP. So much for installing an ASHP. Apparently installing a gas boiler would have got me more points! -
I have the wiring in place but no idea how to set up access points.

I’ve noticed that a couple of the 12 include power line as part of the wifi offering. I’ll have to look closely at these. I also need a wifi in a garden office around 40m from the house. Luckily I have a Cat5 cable into it.
-
Good to hear which model you're using. When I searched TP Deco I find there are 12 different models! So which is the best of the 12 on offer?

Our house is fairly large in volume, laid out over 4 floors and is L shaped, as a result the wifi signal is poor in some rooms. I have Cat 6 to all rooms and the fibre optic router is in the centre of the L. Can anyone recommend a mesh wifi system that will eliminate the weak spots and is easy to set up.
