Isn’t it simply that the new walls need to have a 60 minutes fire rating in both directions which can be achieved with timber cladding plus the right bits underneath?

Then your chimney is downwind of westerly winds, and I think the vast majority of the UK enjoys westerlies as their prevailing wind. Assuming your MVHR unit is loft mounted you could also perhaps fit an additional carbon filtery thing in case of easterlies and other peeps bonfires. How airtight is your house and are you looking at direct air?

Which direction does that window face? Also, are there any other houses in the terrace that current use their chimney?

You will do whatever makes you happy. You don’t need anyone’s agreement from here or anywhere else. But I do look to government to set the parameters well so our beautiful country does continue, overall, to make progress towards a lesser footprint.

But how far does one take this? A huge stash of bottled water, tinned food, iodine and an assault rifle á la many American NRA members? In my more fanciful moments I wonder about planning for a backup battery for life support systems (lighting, MVHR, internet and coffee maker) but in reality in civilised parts of Blighty power cuts aren’t that common. They are fantastic for masonry. For cladding I think battening where you know you’ll be putting a light is a really good idea. The windage on some lights is huge and a rattling light is bad news. I’d not go for ply myself behind the cladding as that might get wet from time to time, so a few extra treated battens in the right places is a good plan.

This is not a complaint, but it’s been a long while since I last looked out to sea and didn’t see turbines.

I think it’s easy to forget that our society already contains many for whom the above is already true. Running a car is expensive to those on low income. Public transport isn’t cheap for a family and isn’t that easy to use now either.

Perhaps they are in terms of the long term cost to our planet.

Ummm, with an ASHP with a decent COP lecky will beat gas just about methinks, especially if one factors in servicing. Oil is still wonderfully cheap, but requires annual servicing and space for storage and deliveries and methinks will soon-ish be targeted to push peeps towards lecky just for political boxticking if nothing else. So, I think given best guesses re future price trends lecky wins. So there. Or rather, so not therefore…
