Daikin Alitherm hybrid without the boiler?
HughF replied to SuperPav's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
Dream do a 3.5kW unit for under £1k -
Ufh in the extension, as it made zero sense to pour a concrete slab and not put pipes in…. Rads in most of the house because, rads… and fan coils where we didn’t want the rads sticking out of the wall (access)…. pretty simple really, whole lot runs on weather compensation with a fixed temperature to the ufh through a mixer. No thermostat, no zone valves, no buffer tank…

Mine runs at 28-29 on the mixer…. Whole house sits at 22.5-23. Rads + fan coils + ufh in the new build.

R290 version available ‘soon’ btw….. looks excellent, as you’d expect from Sprsun + Chris….

That would typically present itself as an error in the power+ module that drives the compressor (the inverter) - a fault like that would be caused typically by a spike on the AC input, I would think. A quick call to Chris might be worthwhile? He can probably advise.

Wall mounted basic ASHP for workshop
HughF replied to Mudmouse's topic in Air Source Heat Pumps (ASHP)
If you get your f-gas qualification through city and guilds, it doesn’t expire. There is another body that issues certs but their one expires after 5 yrs or so. -

Most will only commission stuff they’ve supplied, usual reasons. -
Wall mounted basic ASHP for workshop

No change in the checkout procedure for f-gas units since I bought one in August 2023… and as the offence was dated 2020, I expect the change to the checkout was implemented back then? -

Oops…. To be fair, it did seem a bit too easy to buy r32 filled units from them. -
You mean like an opentherm stat? back to my opentherm to modbus interface idea. I really should start work on that.
-
Hence the reason why Graham Hendra came up with the Lizzie curve. 37@15, 50@0. It’s a good starting point, but ideally the room stat would adapt those numbers if the room ended up too hot or too cold. Sadly, that’s left down to the installer to come back and adjust… and we know how well that works out.
-
It’ll be interesting to see how octopus end up doing it with their new heat pump.
-
I agree completely, why has it taken homely to figure out that automatic weather comp setting, based on user feedback (turn up thermostat to make rads hotter, that’s how most people think) is necessary. Why do the heat pump manufacturers think they can get away without room temperature feedback built in?
-
I genuinely don’t know why these heat pump manufacturers don’t support opentherm for control of flow temp…. Then you could easily hook up a nest or tado and let that do the flow temperature calculation/adjustment.
-
Actually, the more I think about it, he more I think that this is the way forwards for mass adoption. R290, and proper load compensating stats. Turn the stat up, rads gets hotter… people understand that.
-
So, what’s the alternative? R290 heat pumps that support load compensation and high flow temps, along with rads?
-
I need to ground mount my current array, as the building it’s on needs to come down. Given me food for thought…
-
Shame 99% of Grant Aerona system are installed so badly they work terribly…. Unless they’ve refreshed their design the you’ll get a drop in replacement for a boiler, designed to work with standard s plan wiring, at a fixed flow temperature, with on/off controls. Literally every conceivable way a heatpump shouldn’t be installed…
-
Air-air has to be the answer to both these issues. Push button, heat comes out.
-
It’s because they use air-air on retrofit and underfloor exclusively on new build.
-
The same reason everyone talks about a 30kW boiler? I dunno, a historical hangup from when everyone had on/off controls? Oh wait, they still do…. 🤣
-
There is a point at low compressor rpm (and hence a low output) where a greater efficiency is gained by moving to start/stop than by running the compresssor very slowly. I will check my Carel tech notes for the reference for this. But that’s why nearly all heat pumps have a poor modulation ratio, and why they’ll turn the compressor off when they drop below a certain output.

How do people not know what their walls are made of and how much loft insulation they have?
