Having fitted our MVHR system, pipes and all....I was wondering about the flow rates to balance system? They are as follows: set on trickle... flow-in: Open plan Lounge .49 Lounge .56 Bed 3. .36 Bed 2. .43 Bed 1. .46 Out-flows: Kitchen open plan .73 Shower room. .80 Upstairs wc. .90 Bathroom. .85 I have lowered the out-flow % on MVHR by 10% and set the plenums to minimum to get the above out-flow numbers. The in-flow in bed 3 is at max! Are these close enough or am I messing things up?? Thanks David. P.s the house feels very comfortable!

Hi peterW I think our application was more detailed than councils reply, however the magnolia tree will be up to 10' tall, the silver birch up to 9' but the red robin plants will be only be up to 1' high...regardless! Happy to spend on magnolia...like to see it in my lifetime -

Letter of conformation from planning...It goes like this: > flemish bond dwarf wall; 1500mm Photinia Red Robin Hedging > Magnolia tree (semi mature to south east corner) > flemish bond dwarf wall;1500mm Photinia Red Robin Hedging > oak gate and post to pedestrian and vehicular access points > Flaxmans Court (west) > 1500mm Photinia Red Robin Hedging (behind existing chanlink fencing) > oak gate and post to pedestrian and vehicular access point > 2 semi mature fruit trees to raised planter adjacent to rear patio > semi mature Silver birch tree to south west corner of site That's about it...although my architect was a little more detailed (cant find at mo) -

Yes, all part of the conservation requirement. They were quite specific as to hard and soft landscaping, hedging etc.. -

Thank you to everyone who has commented so far, I will check out the websites provided. I live in Kent and would like to get the house signed off as it is now finished, therefore I think I will need all the landscaping completed so the VAT (trees/plants) can be included....?? All the plants mentioned are on the plans, so I guess it's not best to vary the types! ....ok, do I stand any chance of survival with the trees and hedging if I plant within the next few weeks? Or is it a definite No! No? -
I'm looking to finish the landscaping (or maybe start it)... Magnolia, silver birch, some fruit trees and hedging (red robin) Anyone used online suppliers? Magnolia and silver birch needs to be around 3m, 50+meters of red robin hedging. Any recommendations appreciated Thanks David.

Also....how does this type of vapour barrier stack up?... Vapour Barrier and Thermal Insulation Aluminium Foil Membrane - For use in Walls, Floors and Roofs - 1.5m x 50m (75 SQ/M) - CE Approved + Fire Retardant Cheers.

Thanks crofter One of my issues is that I need 50m x 1.5 roll Some of the frame wrap are 100m (to much waste!) Hence could use the rest on the roof...if product specs allowed? Exposure to elements will be short!...but like you say BBA standard is a must. Will continue to check out your recommendations.

Land registry and boundaries

Same here from OS, just turned up wearing florescent jacket with pole and laptop! Said he had a few to do (large local building site in area). One of the coldest days this winter so didn't have a long chat...I first asked was he from the council (applied for council tax clarification around that time) just said he had a list for the area and working through them accordingly. It was nice to have something done and not be paying for it -
Perfect boiler temperature re ufh?
DH202020 replied to DH202020's topic in Boilers & Hot Water Tanks
Guess what I will be doing this weekend then? -
WARNING Like others have said do not use in wet areas...we finished laying ours in lounge area a week before we moved in, then disaster...full blown water leak in kitchen, it ran for 20min, water seeped under the stuck down bamboo floor (to concrete). It immediately started to lift-cup and generally misshapen! I lifted several lengths to dry out floor, but in doing so others that were left began to lift and misshapen as well, so in the end I put large heavy weights on them and gradually dried out floor via the underfloor heating! it was a real mess, managed to replace the boards that came up with new ones, glued them down eventually. you can still feel the cups on the boards over a fair area of the floor, in a way the floor looks a lot older now because the shape of the slightly cupped floorboards. P.s still love the bamboo, I used the rustic finish, definitely hard wearing...just don't submerge in H2o

Perfect boiler temperature re ufh?
DH202020 replied to DH202020's topic in Boilers & Hot Water Tanks
Thanks Jeremy Now for the really ignorant bit! How do I know when it's fully condensing? (Or not?) Sorry to be a real thick head but I don't actually know what that should look (sound) like? Any pointers would be appreciated -
Perfect boiler temperature re ufh?
DH202020 replied to DH202020's topic in Boilers & Hot Water Tanks
Thanks TerryE, will have a look round. Just a note on over heating... we have not had that problem at all via the boiler, seems to heat 1° above target, floor feels warm but not hot and remains like that for most of the day (depending upon weather conditions). We have stone tiles and bamboo floorings. -
Perfect boiler temperature re ufh?
DH202020 replied to DH202020's topic in Boilers & Hot Water Tanks
Jeremy/TerryE I used Jeremy's calculator for possible heating requirement...works out a little less than 1kWh a day in mid winter (we are in southeast so probably outside temperature is a little higher these days) House is fairly insulated...MBC insulated base/floor. Walls 16 Roof 14 Windows triple passive House warms nicely within 1hr to around 19.5° (sometimes doesn't come on for 48hrs) Have set room thermostat 19° Was wondering... could set room thermostat to just fire up for 1hr or less and try altering the boiler for best results?? I have noticed that setting boiler at 48° Floor mixer to min 35° the return is always cooler (not sure temp) than flow!) Will keep a close eye on it for a time -

And that there may be the biggest problem....right space...mmmmmm ...thanks Nick -
Good day everyone! Trying to set the 'sweet spot' temperature on the combination boiler for ufh in my newly finished build. My ufh mixer is set on 35.5° (lowest point) Worcester Greenstar combi set at 46° Room thermostat at 19° (open plan g/f) Is there such a thing as a truly eco setting? Should I raise the ufh setting on boiler knob to 'E' (think that's some kind of economy setting around 58°?) Confused Thanks David.

The great MVHR duct debate.
DH202020 replied to MikeSharp01's topic in Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery (MVHR)
I need to balance my system, I've moved in now (still to build garage) and MVHR works ok but not technically balanced. My vent axia system is quite at normal running speeds, even on boost it's not that loud when extracting through the plenums. I DIYed the flexible ducting using the plan the company designed for me, no rattles or vibrating, house is very comfortable, towls dry overnight, slightly cooler upstairs, which is nice in the bedrooms (about 1°). Only heating is underfloor on the ground floor. Jeremy: I'm not sure how you work your gadget, but if you're willing to lend, I will give it ago using your PDF template. This is not my forte but, I guess, I've built a detached house...how hard can it be?? If any one has a step by step (fool proof guide for idiots) be very interested Thanks David. -
Credit/Debit Reward Cards, Discounts etc
DH202020 replied to Ferdinand's topic in General Self Build & DIY Discussion
I used asda credit card 1% at asda, .5% anywhere else. I combined this with quidco where possible including wicks. You really have to watch paying online or payment at store, quidco only works paying on line (tracked) but if you can get the wicks 10% discount online (or any other discount scheme) rather than going to store, you get the best of both. Quidco has clocked up in my favour around £200 so far (11months). Plus credit cash back (average £10 per month) some of which was personal expenditure. American express works well for the first 3 months up to 5% cash back (new card) cannot generally use with smaller suppliers. For most big purchases, Best deals are negotiated, then pay with credit card.- 151 replies

Building the Dream s6e4 - Are they exaggerating the profits?
DH202020 replied to AliG's topic in Property TV Programmes
Like you I watched with great interest, especially the snip of a price for land! As this was similar to ours (except the size)..ie purchased land with no planing consent, hands on selfbuild with 'homes under the hammer' filming before we started and finally at the end! I recently finished our 3bed detached for around £200k not Inc Land (cost 90k). They then get the local estate agents to have a nose round, giving their expertise as too price and finish. It turns out it wasn't what they were expecting (normal run of the mill in design and finishing) hence they struggled to price it in the general market place. Can't wait to see what they said on camera?... in other words it was all guess work!! I guess as selfbuilders we just 'don't do normal' -
Even at the smaller usage end of the market I am swapping from E.on to Iresa (small provider) no tie in, saving around £160 dual fuel per year Looks easy enough....to swap! Guestamating yearly costs somewhere around £712? (Will be our1st year) Thanks for all who have contributed to this thread, appreciated. David.
