  1. Completely agree, Jack. Fortunately we're still in a negative net cost situation for our energy use so the odd quid here or there is irrelevant. I was merely pointing out that 'doing the right thing' delivers a personal benefit as well as for the grid.
  2. You may have misunderstood, the air pockets need to be between layers of the foil, not at its edges - see image below
  3. My whole house is insulated with multifoil but please be aware that it relies on the air pockets between layers to be effective as insulation. Stuffing it into crevices may reduce drafts but it won't do a lot of insulating. It's also not the best sound insulation, which it not an issue for us (as we're in a very quiet spot) but may be for you.
  4. Not sure if you ladies have finished arguing over the relative merits of the scheme, but we've just completed the third saver session. We 'earned' 75p in the first session and (to my amazement) £1.12 in the second. Pathetic in the overall scheme of things perhaps, but on the nighttime Go rate of 7.5p per unit that equates to about 90 miles worth of free juice for the Electric Mini. All being well we've just earned another 50+ miles worth - which has to be better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.
  5. Fixed rate savings rates have actually dropped a few points in the last two or three weeks. For example, Hodge Bank were offering a 3 year fixed rate cash ISA at 4 65% last Friday, but dropped it to 4.30% over the weekend. I suspect the higher mortgage rates will take longer to drop, but not as long as some may be fearing.
  6. Sounds pdg* to me 👍🏼 The additional points you mention are worth addressing if simple to do and not expensive, but otherwise you should be chuffed with those numbers. * pretty darned good.
  7. Blimey, how much do you normally use in that hour to have saved only 25% but earned £1.11 😯
  8. Plots that get listed for sale on plot browser, or anywhere else for that matter, are usually either overpriced, in a poor location, have little prospect of gaining planning consent, or would be difficult (expensive) to build on. Some may even have a combination of all of those issues. And the finished value of a property of 250m2 can vary massively. It would be worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
  9. Plots less than half that size, with planning consent for circa 250m2, sell for circa £400/500k around here (South Hampshire) so I'd guess you'd be looking at double that, or more, unless it's located next to a sewage treatment works.
  10. Next session is tomorrow between 5.30 and 6.30pm. Slight problem, I won't be home.... ... but Mrs NSS will be 🤦🏼‍♂️
  11. Incidentally, over 288,000 Octopus customers took part.
  12. They take the average for the 'saver hour' over the previous 10 days compared to what you use on that day during the nominated hour. In this case it was between 5pm and 6pm on 15th November. You then earn £2.25 for each kWh saved in the hour. In our case, we used 0.13 compared to an average of 0.46 for the previous 10 days.
  13. Still number crunching the figures for what we earned, apparently. About 70p by my calculations.
  14. And breathe....
  15. I boiled the kettle at 4.57, made Mrs NSS a cuppa, passed the phone and left her to chat to her mother 😉 Edited to add; and the bonus is a 1 degree increase in room temperature due to all the hot air 😀
  16. And I thought my missus was rebellious 🤣
  17. And putting the MVHR into standby takes us down to 111 Watts.
  18. As 5pm arrives we're using 135 Watts
  19. I do wonder whether those who potentially stand to benefit most from this scheme are savvy enough to have even signed up for it. Whereas, those on this forum are likely already energy aware.
  20. I agree Jack, but short of sitting in the dark for an hour with no TV on (try telling Mrs NSS she can't watch 'The Chase' 🙄) and switching off the fridge and freezer, I'm not sure what we can do 🤔
  21. Our first 'saving session' is between 5pm and 6pm today with a rate of £2.25 for each kWh saved. Can't see us making much when the average we've used in that hour over the last 10 days is less than 0.4kWh 🤣
  22. Wayne Kerr Test Honestly.
  23. Finding and securing a plot. Until then, nothing was possible. After that, nothing was impossible.
  24. At a guess, someone painted them red.
