Outdoor Oven

We had one in our villa in Cyprus. Took far too long to get to temp so only used it once. Kind of thing you would put a large lump of meat in a full day to cook long and slow. Used the bbq far more times.

What about a large smoker type BBQ instead.

That and the BBQ would make a good duo for bigger parties. One to cook, and one to keep warm / do the breads and jacket spuds. 

 

So if I let the oven out after a 3-4 hour use, it's still at 200c the next morning when the door is put in. 

 

Gotta love thermal mass..! :P

My father in law (in Crete) has one built into a rustic outdoor kitchen. Yes they aren't quick. But like cooking a while lamb over a fire pit rather than a bbq you can't rush these things.

Too dark for photos now but it was a few weekends work and worth every penny - ideal way to use up left over materials too ..!

 

I'm not sure which way to go with this. Aforementioned FiL's is built into a 'retaining' wall so I'm not actually sure on the design. I'll probably have to go with a more standalone thing of the forno bravo type but I want a bit more of an 'area' with bbq than just an oven. 

 

I havent even worked out a site yet. Is smoke a problem?

Mine has a chimney that is about 18" above the dome and once lit there is little smoke. 

 

I built it into the corner of the garden on a block work plinth and extended one side to put a BBQ on it as well - it's a kettle one that sits on the top. 

 

Underneath there are cupboarda and a wood store so plenty of storage too

Some brilliant ones over on the mig welding forum made from old gas cylinders.

 

I saw Jamie Oliver building / using this one. Would make a good cheap basis for a heat source:

Well yes, and I have no outdoor plumbing to work with either but it is really useful to have a sink there.

That chimney is around 32" in total and is stood on the arch top - it was from a reclaim yard, is Victorian and as it had a crack at the bottom and a chip out of it he charged me £20 rather than £95 for a perfect one .!

 

It does draw well .....

 

Inner some and baking floor are hard refractory bricks, first course of dome bricks are soldier course then they are shaped and cut into half. Mortar is a blend of fire clay and OPC. Outer bricks are half a pallet of furnace edge rejects that cost me 10p each..!

 

Insulation is a mix - under the base is a layer of thermalite blocks, over the dome is a vermiculite fill plus foil and ceramic fibre wool. 

 

I put thermocouples in various places but they have long given up - more of a novelty tbh ..!
