Shell820810 Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Just wondering if anyone has tiled their landing. Most I see are carpet or wooden floor, but in our case a large format white tile would make it brighter and more spacious looking. All personal preference I suppose?
TheMitchells Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 not tried tiling but have you considered a sun pipe? we have one and it is really amazing how much brighter the hall is. no one notices that there isnt a window.

We have a window and it's not really dark, but I just like bright and airy. Light coloured carpet is a no go with 2 preschoolers and 2 dogs. The sun pipe looks good but we have a converted attic above and also wouldnt want to start messing with insulation and airtightness detail around it.
TheMitchells Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 Fair enough - good luck with the tiles, if you go for them. you'll have to give us pictures.
Nickfromwales Posted August 15, 2016 Posted August 15, 2016 First thing that comes into my head is noise. Will people only be barefoot / socks / slippers upstairs? I've tiled a couple of bedrooms. No complaints tbh. Block and beam, or joists?
Ferdinand Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 (edited) Perhaps a similar tile to downstairs, but in a lighter, tone might suggest moving into the more intimate areas of the house (see Caliwg's design book or "Pattern Language"). UFH? Or UFH in a corridor from the master bedroom and not the others? Must reinforce the hierarchy ! Ours is carpet, and our former was was wooden, but we didn't build either. Could you use other tile materials? Ferdinand Edited August 16, 2016 by Ferdinand
daiking Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 (edited) A quality vinyl? Karndean/Amtico? We have this cheaper one in a bathroom http://www.polyflor.com/jh/products.nsf/products!open&family=lux&prodcode=CamaroLocPU&shade=3452 although I'm not sure that's wise. Shell820810 Posted August 16, 2016 Author Posted August 16, 2016 It's bison slab, so hopefully noise shouldn't be an issue. There is ufh heating upstairs as well.
DeeJunFan Posted August 16, 2016 Posted August 16, 2016 My sister has tiles upstairs in the hallway as she has an "Upside Down" house - Living room/kitchen upstairs. She had no issues and there is UFH upstairs also. Just getting the detail right at the top of the stairs. But it looks well
