You absolutely technically correct about the space frame! I'll try and reason out my thoughts.  I do like your example of the racing car, same applies to certain types of boat construction.. solid tim

  • I like this approach and for me a most enjoyable part of the build. Myself and help from my Dad, 75 years old stick built my self build. This is half of it.

…….and please don’t forget these are ideas not finalised drawings…….

  1. If we say that the bit behind the kitchen units is a pantry/utlility on ETC's last drawing, then I don't know what the room to the north of that is - sunbed?!

Looks like the hotpress, hot cylinder and linen storage?

Sure. I'm sorry if I came across as excessively negative last night. They are a great set of ideas.

Your design is very reminiscent of Laura Alvarez's Villa Slow in the Pyrenees, which I have long admired. I dismissed it in the end though as I felt it was more suited to a holiday home than a permanent home. I don't want my kitchen to look like something from a showroom - I'm quite happy for the toaster and coffee maker etc to be on the worktop in full view and I don't think this sort of kitchen layout allows space for that. I think the expectation would be that these sort of things would live in the pantry, but that seems daft to me. I also agree that this layout places the kitchen much more in the living room, which I'm not a fan of. I'm good with open-plan, but some sort of separation is good I think.

Villa slow.jpgEta - Villa Slow doesn't have a kitchen island right enough, but I still don't think there would be enough space for things to sit out on the worktops, seeing as you won't want anything on there apart from the hob.

Just to play devils advocate....if you have a higher back to the island you can have all bits and bobs out but 'shield' from view, but I get it once you've worked hard at coming up with a design you like you are fairly wedded to it (we were) but sometimes a gem of an idea you didn't think of will shine through!
