BadgerBodger Posted 10 hours ago Posted 10 hours ago Where do people get good quality second hand tools. I’ve had yet another bad experience on EBay, this time with a Hilti PAT. I always swear I’ll never go back, but new for a while, then the lure of a better price for a tool I’ll use for a couple of weeks calls…. 1

Mike Posted 9 hours ago Posted 9 hours ago eBay. I've only bought a couple of tools, but hundreds of other items across a wide price range. But do check out how long the seller has been around, their reputation, plus what else they're selling to see if it all stacks up. For more expensive items, video the opening, unpacking and testing - all in one take - just in case.

I think my experience with eBay has been 1:5 for acceptable product v. Disappointment. and pretty much all the satisfactory transactions were for new products. it’s just frustrating that when I sell, I make a point of listing and photographing all worn parts, stating age and serviceability, known quirks etc. my problem with this specific tool is I need it for roughly 10 weeks, likely never again, rental is likely to cost more than purchase (rented tool will be over spec for my needs) and often that comes with a load of running about too when the tool breaks down etc.
Onoff Posted 6 hours ago Posted 6 hours ago Bought loads of second hand tools from eBay, FB, Gumtree. Only one bad experience. Bought a 36V Einhell brush cutter from eBay on the premise it was working...it wasn't.

If you can stand the outlay you will get good money back on little used tools. I bought a post hole auger the other week. 2nd hand ones in my area seem to be around 80-100 with some dreamers wanting more. I managed to buy a brand new one online for 120, delivered to my door. 20 quid of that was VAT. I've done the fence I bought it for now at our new plot. I am seriously considering selling it as have had bad experience with little used petrol tools clogging up. Maybe it doesn't happen with 2 stroke but my whacker plate needs a new carb due to sitting with this new rubbish petrol we have (another win for the eco loons). Anyway I could sell mine for a 20-40 quid loss when a hire firm wanted 60 quid for a day or weekend. I got to use mine at my leisure, no rush. Bit of admin selling it on but no charge on marketplace.

I think you’re right, my problem is that I do this and then don’t want to let go. You know, maybe, maybe I’ll need it again… you know. Fortunately the seller immediately accepted the return when I offered to get a second opinion from Hilti. Can’t for the life of me figure what would have prompted that. Might give it one more try and if not, I’ll have to bite the bullet and empty my wallet with Hilti. They do have mighty fine tools! Edited 3 hours ago by BadgerBodger
