canalsiderenovation Posted yesterday at 22:04 Posted yesterday at 22:04 Has anyone heard of Backyard Discovery? I'm eyeing up this https://www.backyarddiscovery.co.uk/products/2-7m-x-1-8m-bellerose-greenhouse?srsltid=AfmBOoqWCRTgaVCrhYBn4uvSMJGmTkG97VQOB6OdR0rom3ofu__MwLsI After the other half told me that unless I wanted a divorce the chickens had to go, there is now a concrete pad just waiting for something. Who knew that the second hand Omlet chicken stuff actually fetches a fortune... We are trying to avoid glass because the old railway embankment has lots of oak trees and whilst they are high up and the greenhouse wouldn't be shaded the acorns bloody hurt when they fall down on top of you and I suspect they would shatter and crack glass where this potentially may be a bit more sturdy and possibly looks a bit nicer.
FarmerN Posted 13 hours ago Posted 13 hours ago We have just built a new Robinsons greenhouse. I’m amazed at how strong the glass is. It’s toughened glass. Would withstand acorns , but mature oak trees have a habit of shedding branches, that would be a different matter. I think, but am not sure, all greenhouses have to be toughened glass now. If under a tree keeping it clean could be an issue. 1 1
SteamyTea Posted 11 hours ago Posted 11 hours ago The 'glazing' is multi wall poly carbonate sheets, they go 'milky' after a short time and look dreadful. Do they offer an acrylic option ? 1

Do they offer an acrylic option ? I don't think so. I'll message them and see. When we moved in there was an old glass greenhouse that got shattered by a falling tree branch (not in the same place) although it probably wasn't toughened glass either. It was metal and was all rusty etc and generally didn't look great. It's been discounted to £1999 since yesterday and I've been looking at this for at least 9 months and this is the cheapest it has been. Edited 6 hours ago by canalsiderenovation
-rick- Posted 5 hours ago Posted 5 hours ago If the price is good compared to others then maybe worth buying on the basis that you might want to be replacing the polycarb at a later date. I'd guess the polycarb will last a while then all go at a similar time. Glass would get broken one at a time over a period of time requiring occasional replacement. Either way you are replacing bits.

I just had a response from them: We do not offer the option to choose from a different type of material for the sheets used on the greenhouse. However, our 4-wall polycarbonate sheets have been treated with a UV stabilisation that will prevent panels from changing colour through sun exposure. Additionally, whilst our greenhouses are tested against wind and weather, they are purposefully not designed to be fully watertight to allow humidity to escape, which is another benefit as internal condensation can also be reason for the sheets to turn milky over time.
